Yes
I have a canon 400D. And the lens I use the most is a Tamron 200/500mm Telephoto lens. (as I seem to be into small birds). I have just been told that my son, has been and ordered a Kenco Pro 300 AF 2x teleconverter for me for xmas (has not arrived yet).

So as I am a complete novice, my question is what kind of photos can I expect (good or bad results).

Thanks in advance.

what are they like without a teleconverter ?

I think a 1.4 may have been a better choice to get more reach... if they are perched on a branch it should be ok? The samples and comments I've seen about that lens have all said that it's actually pretty damn good but isn't there often issues where AF is lost when using a 2x converter on lenses like this?

If you could have a look in the animals & nature section. I posted (caught this little fellow MK2). It is a picture of a wren at a distance of about 20 feet, taken with the tamron 200/500, the lens was at 500mm. Now would the 2x teleconverter, allow me to get more detail (feathers and such). As I would not need to do such a large crop.

Sorry to be such a pain.

Your not a pain, nobody has a gun to my head sayin "ansver zee qvestion englander" lullz
You dont say how much cropping in you did, is that full frame 500mm @ 20ft ? shot with tripod ?
I'm sure you wont mind me saying, its not very good, since your recognize that with your question about detail.
I think, to get the best out of this lens you need to use a tripod and faster shutter speeds.
The lens is a bit slow especially at the long end F/6.3, that means ultimately you cannot afford any movement of either the subject or the camera if your gonna capture the greatest detail, because the shutter is hardly ever gonna be fast enough to eliminate that problem.
This lens is probably quite capable of some nice detailed shots with the right set-up/conditions.
A teleconverter will magnify everything, the lens will be slower still, the tripod will need to hold twice the length, I'm not sure its feasable to expect 1000mm crisp shots with that lens, mebbe stars, things that are pretty much fixed, but small birds will be tough..
