Im after a D90 for my first DSLR but what is the equivelant Canon camera, ive heard the lenses are cheaper is this right.

Equivelent to the D90 would be the 500 or 550D, the 600D = D7000 really as both are newer, though the forthcoming 650D looks to be a cracking camera.

In my limited experience, lenses are much on a par both price and performance wise. It is certainly possible to get a cheaper 50mm 1.8 for Canon than is the case for Nikon but as regards prices, the two will be much the same for most lenses.

Having said that, I might be totally wrong as I've only been a Nikon user before moving to the X100.

I'm a Canon bod, but I know with the entry level Nikons you need to be careful about which lenses will AF - due to there not being a AF motor in the body.

I asked the question for a friend re the Nikon 50mm & D3100 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=414590 - I'm not sure if the D90 has / has not the AF in the body.

The D90 has the AF motor built-in. :thumbs:
 
The Nikon D90 has a glass pentaprism so will produce a better viewfinder image than an entry level body with a basic pentamirror viewfinder.

I'm pretty sure that both Nikon & Canon entry level bodies only have the basic pentamirror instead of a pentaprism, so worth checking if you need a clearer view for things like manually focusing.

All for £403 inc. delivery but no lens. Do you think i should go for it and what lenses fit.

The D90 mainly sells for £350-£400 on ebay according to the completed listings search.
For the top of this range I'd expect it to come with original box & all originally supplied accessories if poss.

The D90 is a cracking camera, fairly good in low light, has a commander mode using the onboard flash for the Nikon creative light system and a built in AF motor for older lenses, except the AI lenses as they won't clear the mirror when attached.

not that cheap, I'm sure there was a D90 for £350 recently (either here or AVF).

If you want Nikon, I'd look around a bit more (or offer the seller a lower price).

My opinion, (as a Canon user), would be to look for a 500D, 550D or 600D, (depending on budget).
 
The canon t3i I think they call 500d where your at is basically the same slr as the 600 as far as images go. It doesn't have the flip out screen and the video portion is not as good but I have the 600d and really like it. If you have the budget I would go with that but if not the 500 will serve you just as well in my opinion. Good luck.
