That is the worst idea ever in the photography world. Good glass always comes first.

Maybe have a look at 40D instead, or 1D mkII.

What does the 450d not do that you think a 550d will? Apart from the video.

^This.

You'll probably find that the camera is perfect and its the lenses that you need to upgrade.
Getting rid of lenses to fund a camera is generally a bad idea in my opinion, especially when there is so little difference between the old camera and the new one.

Yes you guys are right I was only thinking about the change cos the 550d is 15mp although just read up on tha 40d I could stretch to one of them just I can't do anything on the buy sell page yet ?

You can't post for sale or wanted threads until you have over 100 posts and been a member for at least 30 days, I think.
Just wondering why you want to change the body though, what's is it that you're not getting on with?
If you're not getting the results in your pictures that you'd like the last thing that generally needs changing is the camera body. The main reason's for poorer results are either lower quality glass or the user, to be honest.

You can still buy from the classifieds before 100 posts.

Paul.

There is nothing wrong with the 450D and I most certainly wouldn't sell a lens of that quality to fund what can only be classed as a minor upgrade.

However, If you are thinking of selling your 100-400 lens I may be interested.

Hi Paul

As has been said, what are you wanting a new body to do that yours doesn't ??

The 550D has video

The 40D has a faster fps and is a bigger body

If either of the above are needed, then def go for a new body, if not, either save the money for when the time is right to upgrade, or put it to new lenses.

Don't sell your lens to fund a new body, selling a lens to fund an upgrade of a lens is fine.

Cheers

don't sell your 100-400 for a better body!!

If you want a better body save up then have a look at one of these:

Canon 40D
Canon 50D
Canon 60D
Canon 7D

To all those who were also wondering why he wants to change..

I'm hazarding a guess that you're assuming this will result in better quality shots here?

Unless you intend on printing massive posters, and I mean massive, then the 15MP of the 550d will offer you nothing over what you already have.

A 450D will easilly print to A3 and higher. If you arent printing, then there is no real benefit from more MP, except the ability to crop a bit harder and still have a fairly detailed end result.

You'll just end up with the same quailty pictures and a bigger file to deal with.

For wildlife the more megapixels the better as you always end up cropping heavily with smaller birds. Also the better high ISO capabilities of the 550D are a godsend with the crappy UK weather.

Having said that I would only upgrade when I could afford it and NOT by selling the 100-400 to raise the money!

For wildlife I would definitely look to an 40/50/60D or 7D, or even a used 1D II/n.
Apart from better fps and AF, all these bodies have more external controls, which is very useful for wildlife, where you have to be able to change settings on the fly.

Definitely do not sell the 100-400 though, no camera body, no matter how good can make up for poor quality glass, but quality glass on a poor body can still get very very decent results.

Hi Paul,
I would agree with everybody else that better glass comes first. As an owner of a 100-400mm myself, I would highly advise you not to sell it, you'll quickly regret it and one another one!

The differences between the 450 and the 550D are not as huge as you may think, certainly not worth losing a highly regarded lens over. You'll only notice a large difference once you go to the likes of a Canon 7D/5D but then owning decent glass would almost be a requirement for these cameras, and most certainly deeper pockets. :)

Mark.

I have 500D and have found that a lens upgrade makes a great difference,

Thanks everyone

As you all say it's the lens really so I'll carry on with my setup for now till I'm better anyway I went out yesterday with a top bird photographer for a couple of hours and I learnt a lot I had no idea the focus button could be changed from the shutter one to the zoom out one by your thumb and he changed a lot of the settings for me I'm already getting better results I should learn to use my 450d before I even think about changing

Thanks again all

Oh and I will upload one of my pics from today and hope to get some critique and pointers
