Am a complete novice! I have always enjoyed taking pictures and for years have thought about getting more into it, anyway here I am at last........having been given a bundle of 2 canon T70 SLR cameras and loads of huge lenses and stuff!!! that I don't know where to start with!!! however as much as I feel I should start with the old school stuff I kinda want to get a DSLR so as to get some instant results!!! Are any of the attachements compatible with the DSLR's? Or do I need to start from scratch? and which one should I go with? am going towards the canon for old times sake and would like to invest in one that I won't outgrow too quickly? Any advice welcome, without too much techical jargon please, lol oh and could you reccommend a good basic book for me to learn from? Thank you

What do you take pictures off? Budget etc may help into which DSLR...

As for will the old lenses be compatible I'm sure one of the more experienced TP'ers will be along shortly to point you ni the right direction :)

Welcome aboard btw...

Hi and thanks was not sure this was the right place to post as is my first time! I was hoping for aroung £300-£400 and in the past have enjoyed taking natural pictures of people, unaware, capturing real emotions. Am an avid cake baker and would like to capture them and their true colours with all that glitters, so the picture invites you to eat them! ha have taken some abstract close ups of parts of vehicles which I quite like and as I live near a fishing village, would like to capture the boats on the water at different times of the day with the sun just rising ect.
As you can see, I jump from one project to another lol

You could do a lot worse than havnig a trawl throught he For Sale section on the forum and have a look whats available 2nd hand, being owned by enthusiasts the kit's well looked after and some bargains to be had from bodies to lenses alike!

You should be able to pickup a body and some lenses within your budget and then add to it as you sit fit/as the bug grabs you :)

Thanks andrewc that's good to know.

Have been reading lots of threads on the forum and am thinking the canon 450D sounds like a good start. Think perhaps should go to Jessops and play!

yeah the 450D is great to start with I know loads of people pro and just for fun using them.

From what I've been reading, I'm thinking the 450D with the 18-55IS kit lens, to start with, is there anything else I need straight away?

ha ha yes places to visit!! Can't wait! want to have it right now and go out to play!!

Make sure you go and play, I made the mistake of not trying before I bought and am now at the point where I need to upgrade.

Buy once! :)

That would be a perfect place to start. Then you can buy an adapter for your FD Lenses and use them. You will have to focus manually but it's easier with the 450d (or better) as you have live view with zoom so you can zoom into the subject for pin sharp focusing.

Have you got a list of the lenses you have?

BTW The FD lenses can produce stunning results and are worth good money depending on which ones you have.

My ignorance shines through!! ha ha am trying to find names on the lenses! So here goes.........how funny have just taken off lens cover! Canon FD 50mm, zoom 70-210mm (macro!) Tokina SD 28-70mm. Slightly worrying that did not even know where to find the names, iif I have even!! Hoping this will not be how I am for long! ha

Definitely worth a look on there, there are some good bargains to be had. I have a 400D body for sale, plus accessories, if you are interested (link in sig below). You would have to buy a lens for it, but again there's lots to be had from the classifieds.

hello Jonsey, glad you posted this, I bought a 400d last weekend and I'd totally forgotten I was given a T70 a couple of years back - just dug out my lenses and I have a 50mm prime and a canon zoom lens fd 70-210mm 1:4 - i suspect this means i need to go and do some searching! what sort of an adaptor might we be looking at to get them to fit a 400d/450d?

Ah thanks Edster but am quite set on the 450D now. Did have a look in the classified, however a relative has quite a substantial discount for John Lewis and even though dearer then a lot of other places is still quite a steal!

hello creamykiwi, am glad it jogged your memory, it's so nice when you can re-use and adapt older items with new technology this seldom happens nowadays.

No worries mate, hope you get a good deal on a 450D.
