What camera upgrade from an entry level DSLR

I currently have a Nokia D60 with the standard 18-55mm VR Lens and a Sigma 75-300mm lens. I initially took up photography as a hobby and over the past couple of years have found delight in taking some great shots to capture those moments in time.

I cannot fault the picture quality of the D60 that I currently have, but it’s not perfect in a few respects. One of the main frustrations is the view point markers, or in this cameras case lack of a vertical view markers. It only has horizontal markers to line up a shot.

Secondly is it has a lot of features but this requires going into the menu system. I would like my next camera to has a lot more buttons that allows for quick adjustment.

Lastly I definitely would need my next camera to have an integrated motor for the auto focus as opposed to having to purchase lenses with the motor incorporated i.e. more expensive/heavier.

What would you suggest? Most of my photography is motorsport, but I also take a lot of holiday snaps.

D90, a big step up from the D60 (I have both) ;

- more buttons +info screen for quick adjustments
- Much faster more positive focussing
- Much better viewing screen
- Much better auto ISO
- 4.5 fps motor drive
- body mounted focus motor
- Excellent high ISO images
- full grid for lining up as you have asked for!

It just goes on and on, its a great camera, impresses me every time I use it.

Plus one for the D90 if your using Nikon. Even though im Canon I love it, the D90 has always had good reviews and great features. Its getting old though sadly.
 
Another vote here for the D90 :clap:

I originally purchased a D40 (my first dslr) and upgraded from that to a D80 but was unhappy about the high ISO performance so very quickly bought a used D90 from another TP'er.

LOVE IT!! :D
 
I went from a D60 to a D90 and was blown away by the difference. You won't regret it for a second.
 
Have you thought about changing brands? Canon 50D is very good value...and it ticks all of your boxes!! ;)
 
D90 seems to be the sensible money champion at the moment :thumbs:
 
Thank you for the replies. The D90 is looking favorable. My only issue is that it's been out for a couple of years now so must be due a replacement?

Those cameraphones are getting far too advanced :D

Seriously though, the D90 seems to fit your requirements perfectly, and I've seen some stunning shots taken on them. Very good ISO performance too which is something that sometimes people don't take into consideration when buying, but can be a lifesaver!

Don't worry about whether it's replaced or not, a great camera is a great camera regardless!
 
another vote for D90 , i recently upgraded from a D60 , which the same as you i thought was great , but i needed the versatility of the D90 , its in a different league altogether
 
Don't forget that for the same money as a new D90 you can pick up a good s/h D300. It may well not be for you but is worth considering :shrug:

Don't also forget the older D200 although the high ISO is not as good as the D90/ 300 by all accounts.

I went from a D40 to a D300 earlier this year and have been blown away (and slightly confused at times) with the differences in handling and IQ - just need to get better glass now to go with it :bang:
 
Another vote here for the D90. I moved from a D60 to a D90 last year, it's an excellent camera.
 
Or do what you're going to end up doing a couple more years down the line, and go for a D300 (with or without the 's'). I'm a D40x user, was going to go D90, but now going for a used D300s off here. Expensive, and complex, jump, but I know what i'm like, and a couple of years down the line I know what I'd do, so I just did it now to save the money and the hassle
 
If you are sticking with Nikon then the D90 would definitely be a good choice. I went from a D40, the difference is incredible.

Dave has pointed out most of the advantages above. For me the greater flexibility of the higher ISO capabilities are worth it alone.

You really would not be disappointed, absolutely love mine.
