Hello guys I'm 16 and am starting college soon and studying photography. I just wanted to know what camera would you recommend me buying. I have around £500 to spend.
Thanks for any advice.

Is that total budget? Remember lenses add substantial costs.

Does the college have a pool of kit available for borrowing? If so it might make sense to buy the same brand/fit.

I would buy used - you'll get more glass. Think wideangle/fast portrait prime and long telephoto on top of the kit lens.

Oh - and what about lighting/flash? Software?

Nothing until you know what will be required for your course.

Some courses will see you looking for digital and others will require that you buy a film camera (scary eh?)

So keep that money in your pocket until you know exactly what will be required. And enjoy your course. :)

My best advice to you would be to wait and see what is needed for your course, most photography school will let you borrow their cameras and lenses for your projects and etc.

Don't spill the money yet on a dslr, after your first year you will know much more about photography and you will be able to decide which camera suits best for you and for your budget. Has aliB said, you might have to start with a film slr, so you should probably stack up the money for a better advised choice :)

Max.

I bought a Canon 450d just before Christmas and couldn't be happier with it. I have just bought a 50mm f1.8 lens from Kerso(highly recomended) and love that too. Just my opinion though and i'm certainly no pro.

Keep an eye on the for sale section here! There are often some good deals to be had. You need to decide if that's your total budget or you want to spend more on additional lens etc. £500 would probably get you a 40d, or 400 /450d with a lens.

Be warned it can be an addictive and expensive hobby! :)

The same £500 could buy a medium format film camera and up to three lenses.

So look at your course material first Alex before you blow that budget. :)

AliB makes the best point.

I just assumed you were looking for a dslr, but that may well not be the case.

Canon EOS 450D with the 18-55mm IS kit lens. You'll have no regrets.

I don't think so... Why buy a throw-away lens?
It's not a throw away lens, and you can't buy a new 450D body without the 18-55mm IS. I agree, the 18-55mm non-IS was shocking but I loved my 18-55mm. It's very underrated and it'll be fine for him until he has £600+ to spend on a 17-55/24-105L/24-70L (etc).

Sure, find out as much as you can about the kind of equipment you'll need for the course, but I can't help thinking that there's a whole summer of photography ahead.

If you get a Nikon or Canon now I can't see that you'll ever regret it. Stick with these brands as they are popular for borrowing/lending lenses, and are easy to sell if you have to.

Yes you can.

I don't think so... Why buy a throw-away lens?

I have the non-IS version of the lens that came with the 300D and I still use it on a regular basis and have taken some really nice shots with it... yes it's not as good as some lens's but on the other hand the 450d isn't as good as a 5D, a skoda isn't as good as a porche, etc etc... for the money its a perfectly capable lens especially for a beginner.....

If it's digital I would recommend the 450D with the kit lens, you will be more than happy with it and when the time comes and money allows you can upgrade your lens

Yes you can.
Where from? I looked everywhere but couldn't find the body alone unless someone was prepared to split the kit package.

Also have a play with the Nikon range at your nearest dealer.
Plenty available s/h and well with in your budget.
The Nikon lenses are also very good value for money if you stay away from the F2.8 range.
