canon S5 i/s is a close contender

Canon 350D - when decent image quality, good res. and capable features all came together in one affordable package

To be fair though it probably had more to do with when I could afford to spend that sort of money - a year earlier and it would have been a 300D, a year later a 400D or whatever the corresponding Nikon was at the time..

:plusone:

My first play with digital was the Sony Mavica MVC-FD200

The ability to write to floppys was what got me.

Then got a Canon 10D and its all got mega expensive from then.

Mine was an Olympus Mju 400, used it for about 3 months and knackered it  was going to buy something similar then remembered my Zorki 4 and Zenit E and thought I want an SLR type so went out and bought an EOS30D

Mine was a Fuji S7000 when my kids were little, I remember the camera was £500ish and the 320mb microdrive was about £90, how times change with the price of memory cards.:D

Resisted giving up my film camera for a few years, then processing started to get more expensive, cost of film and choice of film on the shelf started getting worse. I was at a car rally one day and there was a chap there with a Canon 10D and a 40D. He loved the 10D and mentioned that I should be able to get one on ebay for less than £150,,,,,,,,,that was good enuogh for me!

What started to make me think that digital was a viable medium? A Minolta DiMage 5. 3.? MP which Dad bought to replace an elderly Pentax SLR outfit. Images from the Minolta looked good at up to A4 and that was big enough for me! Mt first digicam of my own was a Nikon Coolpix 3100 - again, 3.? MP and enough for me.

Neither of the above gave me the flexibility of my film SLRs though and I wanted the immediacy of digital so when the D70s was introduced, I started looking for an end-of-line D70 and found one - a kit with the 18-70 for the bargain price of £699. To cap that, there was £100 cashback from Nikon AND the dealer was offering £100 of free prints bringing the real cost of the camera down to under £500 which I could justify to myself.

Even that didn't replace film - I had bought a Sigma 12-24 to get a real wide angle on the D70 and had enjoyed it on film as well, so when the D700 was introduced, I couldn't wait to be able to afford one. Finally, shortly before Christmas last year, it became very obvious that the importers couldn't keep absorbing the poor exchange rate and that the D700 was about to go up. A lot. So, close examination of finances was undertaken and a positive result ("Well, if buying it will shut you up about the f*****g thing, just buy it!") saw me getting one from Jessops as a kit with the 24-120 VR. Since then, I've barely used the film bodies although when I do, I enjoy the extra little whir the give out as they advance to the next frame. To be honest, when I reach the end of the films that are in them, I may trade them in against something else, although I'm not sure an F65 and an F80 are worth much!

Konkord compact digital camera. £170 from Argos back in 2003.

man, it was crap.

Only had P&S 35mm for snapshots until 2003, weekend before GP's at Donington park QVC had a Fuji finepix P&S for around £300. Got the camera on the Tuesday and it was great to use and being able to review your shots . Next stop buy a photoprinter, first time I printed my own photos . But the next big upgrade was after seeing my mates new set up, Canon EOS 300D. The results he showed me from Oulton Park BSB were fantastic, but completely out of my price range. Opted for a bridge camera a Nikon coolpix 8800, 8mp and 10x optical zoom.

My first digital camera was a Konica Minolta Dynax 7D in early 2005. I knew that I wanted to go digital but had to wait what seemed like ages for Minolta to finally release a digital body. I had 2 x Dynax 9xi film bodies at the time and wanted to use the same lenses, flash etc.. I only discovered after getting the 7D that the (expensive) flash was not compatible. Since then I've sold the lot and moved to Canon.
