You might be better off, being a complete novice, going into your local camera shop and trying out all the models in your budget. There's quite a few entry level and better cameras within your budget and you'll need to know which one suits your hands, and which has the best feeling for you.
There's quite a few twin lens kits around and some good bargains available on the internet, even cheaper if you don't mind getting an imported model but you won't get the UK warranty if you do (not a big problem to be honest). See what you like and then see what you can get for your money, and welcome to the forum.

Have a look at a Pentax K7. It plus a kit lens should be well in your budget.

All Pentax K mount lenses made from about 1975 onwards will fit current Pentax DSLRs and image stabilisation is in the camera body, so any lens will be stabilised.

Just a bit above your budget would get you a Pentax K5 and a kit lens, which would be a superb setup.

thanks for the reply chaps! il take myself to the local camera place tomorrow

Hi Kieran & welcome

As has been said, try out different makes and models and see which you prefer the hold of / which feels most intuative to you to use...

There are pros and cons for the different makes, 1 example is Sony (+ I think Pentax) and IS built into the body so any lens will have IS available, Canon + Nikon don't, so you have to buy the lens with IS in it (which generally puts the price up).

If you have any further questions, ask away.

Enjoy yourself today

i suggest sitting down and figuring out what do you actually want in the long run. I've wasted lots of $$ buying and selling products which were bought on impulse. And a piece of advice, lenses are alot more important than the camera body itself. Try getting a second hand 500d and 50 f1.8 for a start

If you want to buy new, check out camerapricebuster.co.uk

They show the lowest prices around, a quick look showed me there were 2 lens kits with canons 550d or nikons d3100 within budget. A longer look would give more choice.

My personal preferance would be to buy second hand. For example, you could probably get an 18-55mm kit lens and canon 70-200mm f4L and a 40D body well within budget, which would be a great camera, reasonably wide landscape lens and a superb lens for action. Thats just one of a million options though!
