Now I have a DSLR, some (3, soon to be more) lenses, some filters, a tripod, and various other bits of kit, I think I probably need something a bit bigger than my old and trusty Lowepro Off Trail 1.

Crumpler look nice but I think I'm going to need something more along the lines of a Tamrac backpack, with the dangly tripoddy bits an' t'ing.

I can't be arsed to spend more than about £60, but bear in mind that this is going to have to travel on a plane. Which brings me to my second point (oh, all right, I've only just thought of this bit), what are the airlines like about people taking a hoooooge rucksack full of kit with a tripod hanging off it into the cabin ? I tend to go to places like Borneo or Hawaii (sorry, not trying to show off, just trying to give you an idea of what I'm up against) and we're off to New York and Zanzibar next year, so I really need to get this "camera and planes" thing down to a fine art.

Anyone with plenty of travel experience with camera kit, your advice would be gratefully received.

I'll even bring you a nice keyring back if it helps.
 
You'll still only get a small bag on as hand luggage, check with whatever airline you plan to travel on.
 
Just picked up a Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic (see HERE) which holds a lot for such a small bag & might fit your airline needs?

I've got a tamrac cyberpack8 which holds a pile of stuff, great bag but no use for planes. Recently got a lowepro Nova5 AW which holds a surprising amount for all the size of it i.e. two bodies and 3 lenses plus bits. Bit easier to use than a backpack as well.
 
I took my MiniTrekker AW on my trip to Ireland recently, it easily fit inside the size restriction... it was massively overweight but no-one checked that luckily.
 
Tesco do a very good line in free packaging at the checkout. :D
 
hop on an airline's website and find the baggage dimension restriction numbers then go shopping armed with that knowledge. :)

many of the bags may be too thick but some manufacturers make specific carry-on bags (for a premium mind!)
 
Airlines restrictions apart, there's no such thing as the perfect bag.

I have a large Tamrac reporter type shoulder bag which takes all my gear at a pinch, (except the 500mm) is far more convenient for access to the gear, but is a phenomenal weight on your shoulder and very tiring.

I also have a Lowepro AW Mini Trekker which is by far the most comfortable way to carry a lot of kit, but getting access to change lenses etc is a bit of a faff.

I'll shortly be acquiring a Lowepro 600W long lens bag which will take the 500 F4 with body attached and very little else.

Ho hum.. :shrug:
 
I have one of these TBK ... holds an enormous amount of gear except really long lenses which Jill carries in her 'normal' backpack ... :lol: ... taken it all over the world and never had a problem with airlines ... although fully loaded it can be quite heavy ... mostly airlines just worry about dimension and little else ...

Looks just the ticket mate but I guess I'm going to need some way to attach the tripod to it. How does everyone else do this ?
