Hi Guys,

I haven't been on this forum for a very long time, and I used to have a 450D.

I sold this a while ago (Big mistake) and now I am looking to purchase myself another camera.

I am looking at spending around £450 and was wondering what I should be looking at, and where I can get the best deal?

Is a 450D something I should get again?

Thanks.

You can get a very good secondhand 40D for £450.

If youv'e ever held one you will realise how much better it is than the 450D.

Sorry, I had a 400D!

I am assuming the 450 is a newer model of the 400?

What is the 40D like in comparison to the two? Would I get some lenses included in my budget?

You could get a 450D + kit lens brand new in that budget, 40D I think you'd be looking at s/h body only.

Unquestionably the 40D is better built and has more crossed focus points than the 450D but the output is very similar [I shoot a 450D whilst my mate has a 40D].

It looks like your budget probably dictates the 450D [assuming you want to go with Canon].

I would say that the 40D is a better camera than the 450D because it is a more professional body with a better spec:
- 9x cross type focus ponts instead of just the center one on the 450D
- Magnesium shell
- Up to ISO 3200 Vs ISO 1600
- pentaprism Vs pentamirror viewfinder. Pentaprism viewfinders give a brighter and larger image compared to pentamirror types
- 6.5fps Vs 3.5 fps
- Shutter speed of 1/8000 sec Vs 1/4000 sec
- larger memory buffer, being able to store 75 JPEG or 17 RAW files in one continuous burst Vs 53 JPG files or 6 RAW
- Support for sRAW format (more compressed file size)
- Use Kelvn values to set white balance

I would say though that for the majority of people, these differences are minor and they would not notice the difference.

Given the normal price of a current x0D model Vs the 450D, the 450D would be better value.

But.....there is a cracking deal on Argos for a brand new 40D with lens kit with 12 month guarantee for £556. Given that deal, I would go for the 40D kit. If you don't need the lens, then sell it for approx £180-£200, I believe the lens is about £400 new, by itself !

If you can afford it, go for the 40d. You'd only need to shoot with it for 10 minutes to see what a difference quality components make (plus if you drop it you will still have a working camera!)

Cheaper still, but equally solid is the 30d. Harder to come by but great little cameras.

I can't comment on the differences etc from experience. However, I have just ordered the 40d from Argos clearance on ebay as referenced above. Was definitely the best bargain I have seen in the last couple of weeks and the 40d seems to be very highly regarded. They have 54 left right now on the Argos clearance site... Go for that if you can stretch to it!

How much is a 40D usually?

Is there anything wrong with the clearance models?

Given that the 450d with a kit lens is only £100 less new IIRC, I would have thought so..

40ds have been selling on here second hand for around £400 - 450 in the last week or so. The lens the clearance kit comes with is worth circa £200 on ebay (second hand) - I saw an auction finish on one when I was contemplating the purchase.

When I did the sums, although I hadn't wanted to spend so much, I thought it's probably still worth the money I paid in 6 months time.

There is a full definition of clearance items on the clearance site. But basically I wouldn't be surprised if it looks untouched. I got a lens from the site a few days ago, perfect packaging and 1 month warranty... what more can you ask for :)

If you're looking at only spending £450, then I think you'll struggle to get a 40D and lenses. What kind of stuff do you want to shoot? If you just want a general purpose line-up, you can't go with the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS, which together covers pretty much everything for ~£200. Add on a 400D for another £200, £250, and you're all set for under your budget (this is all second hand mind).

Hmmm, if that's the case, you might not need the telephoto lens? Personally I don't really like the 17-85 kit lens that comes with the 40D, so you could always go for the body only (£400 - £450), and the 18-55 IS (£70). Then you could replace the 18-55 with something nicer a bit later on, as it's a really cracking lens for very little money!

Girlfriend has just said she will give me £200 towards my purchase!

So, I guess the Argos 40D is my best bet if it is only going to set me back £357?

If it helps, I upgraded from a 450D to a 40D a couple of months ago.

The "feel" of the 40D is so much better than the 450D - in fact I cant think of anything negative to say about it - go for the 40D - you wont be dissapointed.

Russ.

I have just gone to buy the 40D on eBay, and all 115 of them have sold out!

Will they be having more of these does anybody know?

You snooze, you lose !
Personally I don't think they will have any as this camera is an old model but never say never !

They had 115 and they sold pretty quick (3 days). Some people were buying them in lots of 5s and 8s so you may find some popping up in various places soon - for a small profit.
