Hi, i brought a umbrella flash off my friend. Never had one before, so not sure what cables I need to connect it to my Canon camera... the two ends of cable look like this..

From what i can see, the both need what i call a 'microphone jack', on for the lamp, and one for my camera, but one end is completely different.

ideas what i need to get?

What camera have you got ? That lead has a jack to plug into the light where it says sync . The other end is a pc plug . Canon only fits these on xd xxd bodies . If you have an xxxd body you'll need a hotshoe trigger of some sorts eg wireless triggers like the rf602 .

One of these, if your camera has a hotshoe and no PC sync socket :)

Don't plug the sync lead directly into your camera. The 336v uses a 9Volt comms charge that could damage it.

Try a source a cheap set of radio triggers like an RF602 instead.

Canon Digital SLR's (except 300D, 10D and the old D30/D60) will accept 250v on both the PC sync (if it has one) and the hotshoe contacts.
The exceptions above used small mechanical contacts on the shutter mechanism which limited the voltage but all later bodies have electonically generated sync contacts.
