Am I the only one with a few strange habits? For example...

  • When editing in Lightroom I never have a value at 13 (+ or -)
  • I only like 'proper' ISO like 200, 400, 800 etc... None of this 320 or 640 stuff
  • Same with aperture, while I will use 2.2 or 3.2, I never use anything smaller than 3.2 other than 4, 5.6, 8 (like 6.3 or 4.5)
  • Never go slower than 1/60
Anyone else...

I started with a film camera which is what I think has made me like you in terms of aperture and ISO. I can't think off the top of my head of any others but I'm sure, when other people join in, there will be lots I agree with

I do that too - something about the intermediate ISOs just being exposure compensation ?

Never going slower than 1/60 is a bit odd though

I'm a sucker for always extending my thickest tripods legs

Thats what i heard about ISO too.

Tend to have people in my pics 95% of the time, hence shutter, any slower and i get subject blur.

Fair enough - I'm birds 1/400 ish as a rule and landscapes with a tripod - shutter speed as long as I can go without food lol.

People tend to just be snaps for me but with shortish IS lenses with no great expectations so I'll go a bit slower than that

I have to correct the rotation of almost every picture I take because I cock my head very slightly to one side. My clarinet teacher used to tell me off for the same thing at school too, so I guess it's just one of those weird things...

Isn't there lenses that have an aperture of f4.5 though? That's not 'made up' like the ISO.

I do only stick to normal ISO increments though, for the reasons mentioned.

Nice to know it's not just me, I've tried almost everything to improve my technique.

Is it incurable Charlotte?

Darren

PS, love the stuff on your website.

This happens with almost every photo I take...I even brought up the grid to try and align things, but it made things worse! How I managed that, I don't know! BUT I have also tried to make sure my head is not at an angle and just can't work out what I am doing wrong!

I shoot with both eyes open.

Yes, me too! I learnt to do that while shooting water polo. If you don't keep one eye on the action then you're liable to get hit by the ball!

I virtually always shoot AV , and I nearly always (unless inside) use the shade setting on the WB even in full sun - this goes back to Andy Rouse advising me that it was like using a warm up filter.

As a video shooter, I do exactly the opposite. Apparently 160-multiple ISOs produce less noise (here)...

Correct!! Certainly on Canon stuff this is the case. Less noise at 640 than at 400.

I always use full manual.

I hold my camera On The Huh, hence my avatar name. One of the reasons why I like plenty on MP's so I can straighten and crop.

I used to be really OCD about my long exposures they had to finish on a zero, so 30/40/50 etc I was cured of that when I got my 5D3 as it dosn't have second counter other than on the top LCD which at night would mean either a torch or touching the camera to illuminate the LCD neither of which I'm planning on doing

The 50mm lens on my RB67 lives at f22 and never changes for landscapes.
Another foible of mine is that as soon as I've finished using it for a few seconds, I turn my 5D off, it's become muscle memory and I keep trying to stop myself from doing it as 50% of the time I put the camera up to my face and realise it's turned off :(

Its an East Anglian saying from mainly Suffolk and Norfolk meaning not straight basically.

Cheers Heather, I like a laugh but I'm not P***ed (yet! ;))

You got me!

I usually do the ISO thing too. I also when shooting with a long lens after taking a shot I point the lens up them bring the camera down to avoid hitting people even if no one is there (used to using it in busy environments.)

I try not to use any other focus point other than the centre one, I also only like full ISO values, ive never taken a custom white balance reading, and I always take ALL of my kit out with me :)

I always have to put the lens cap on perfectly straight with the Nikon logo reading the right way up!

Everything I shoot always has the same shade preset white balance. I only ever change WB in PP if I'm shooting people indoors under artificial light (very rare).

I carry a tripod everywhere but rarely ever set it up.

I refuse to shoot in Shutter Priority mode. I view it as a tool of Satan. I refused to use a Konica SLR because it only had this mode.

When developing stuff, I will only use whole minute increments for B&W. I begrudgingly accept the need for a strict 3 minutes 15 seconds for C41 though.

I only use the extreme ends of zoom lenses and foot zoom, unless I'm restricted and I have to resort to actual zooming.

:plus1:

....and everything has to be in the right place in my bag, even if they are the same size!
