Guy's I shot a roll of film last night then put it back in the fridge till this morning so I could get it developed. Only problem is I put it right next to the un-used roll now I have no idea which is which...:clap::bonk::bonk::bat::bat:

The only chance ive got is that they always put the rolls into the plastic container the same way each time as I put it back in the other way round. but which way round is the un-used film?? It's portra 400 BTW..

Unused film will have a feeding lip, not hard to tell which is which

Well - i'm assuming you've rewound the film "Leader Out" - i.e. not wound it all the way back into the film canister - otherwise it would be obvious which one you'd shot - i'd examine the leader section of each film for wear and tear, as even the most gentle of cameras will put small creases/ripples into the film.

On my roll of unused Superia 400, the rounded notch part of the roll is facing upwards, facing towards you as you open the canister.

Yes Mark the feeder is still out so I went back and checked for slight damage but there is none.. but there is finger prints on the feeder of one and not the other.. Putting that one in and hoping for the best.

Thanks for the quick reply's guys..

I can offer no helpful advice, but fingers crossed for you Matt

On the roll i think it is the male end is facing down..:gag:

Cheers  I fear I still have a lot to learn where film is concerned. Mainly check twice do once! :shake:

I'd call the way film comes in the canister the 'right way up' ie 'male' end up, overlapping piece of body going clockwise when viewed from top etc.
Absolutley every roll of film I've ever used has been in the canister this way up.
Because I shoot Kodak and they use a flat topped cannister (as opposed to a shaped one that engages with the 'male' end of the film roll) you can put used films back in upside down.
I also fold the leader over on used films (I cut it off before loading them anyway) so that even if I forget to put it in upside down or all my used and unused films came out of the canisters in my bag I'd still know which was which.

and if you're going to rewind "leader out" always fold a little notch into the leader as you remove it from the camera. Though - if you're having it dev'ed for you - wind it into the canister - leader out only really comes easier if you're souping your own tbh!

well you could develop one

50% chance it's the one

if blank, you now know your original images are still safe in the frig...

and you only lost price of a roll plus dev......worth it to save my images IMO

I wouldn't know where to start mate. Plus I would have to invest in all the equipment and learn everything... I don't spend enough time taking photos as it is!! So much easier to let someone else do it.

If someone else is devving your films for you then why on earth are you leaving the leader out?

could be like my EOS-3 - iirc the custom function to leave leader-out was already set  Of course - if it's a windey-windey camera, then it's down to Matt ;)

I didn't realise it was a problem?

Yes Mark, I have an EOS5 and it leaves it with the leader still out.

Why is it an issue?

Matt

You don't need to leave the leader out really for anything unless your switching films mid-roll or your developing it yourself. In the lab they extract the leader anyway so its unnecessary to leave it leader out. Look up a manual for the EOS 5, one of the custom functions will let you select whether you want the leader in or out.

Cool set to fully wind in film, wondered what the cf function on the command dial was for...

presume that's an answer to mine

so ............i meant send ONE to PhotoExpress

dev and scan to CD ...if it's blank  your images are on the one in the fridge...SORTED

I'd just develop them both, you get your shots but loose a film.

excellent lateral thinking..........:p

except........if the CD comes back with developed images...THEN the roll in the fridge is still usable and not lost
