Yes
:help:All I want to be able to do is take a good photo! Im not interested in a superb, stunning pic, just 'good' would do.
I had my 400d out before, ive just got a nifty fifty and a 70-200 IS so I thought id have a play!

I took a few shotis in my garden, just as practice, flowers, weeds, rain drops etc. I came back in, plugged it into my laptop and everything was black!! While I was outside it ajusted the WB to 'cloudy day', the ISO etc, but it seemed to have made things worse!!! Please help me!

:help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help:

Can you get any exif data of the black images?

Hi jenbrads,
I know this may sound stupid but how about posting one of the pics?
That way we can look at the Exif data and see if we can spot anything obvious.
Failing that, just post the exif data!

exif data? (sorry)

Hi Jenny
can you post some pictures so people clever than me can look at the exif data, should give an idea what is wrong :suspect:

edit ...must type faster !!!!

First I assume you took the lens cap off!!! Did you have any exposure compensation on?

Try it on the dreaded full auto (green box) if the same thing happens its a faulty camera (Canon told me to try that with a problem I had!!)

Also try posting a pic on here so that people can see the settings you have used then they will be able to help.

What mode were you taking the images on? Have you changed any custom settings?

Exif data is a mass of information stored in your shots about camera and lens settings plus more

There are many free applications

Opanda is popular

http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html

It allows us to see what your settings were on the camera

yes yes I took the lens cap off!! I got so annoyed thet I deleted most of them off my laptop!!
I am quite new to this so im sure it was a mistake on my settings. . .. . . its raining to hard now for me to go out so will try again later or tomorrow! GRRRRRR

Just take a pic indoors, if the settings are way out the result should be the same.

then upload here or copy the exif data using opanda and put it here.

1. Chill :) it's all good..
2. Set camera to auto
3. Sit the camera on a solid surface and press the shutter
4. Upload the pic
5. Await diagnosis while enjoying a cup of tea

NO! Don't do anything with your camera yet! Wait until it is dry!!!!

Then yes, take a shot with the dial set to "P" as it least we can rule out underexposure on a biblical scale.

What about the memory card? Have you got it set to shoot without a card in the settings because maybe it's a problem with the card. Or you may be covering the lens with your hand? hehe

milk and 2 sugars please:)

haha. it must be me with a wrong setting, on auto the pics look great. . . . . .as I said, I got sooooo annoyed with the 'black' ones, I just deleated them!!

Are they still in your recycle bin? At least you have narrowed it down to a wrong setting, and that should not be too hard for the people on here to sort :)

HERES ONE!!!!!

See not as bad as you thought.

Have you read the book "understanding exposure" by Bryan Peterson, it may prove very useful.

what a list of problems I have, just trying to set up a program to show exif on my images!!! I am getting there I think!!
I am working on it

I feel your pain...we all go off and buy a new camera and think that we will be able to take great pictures because of how much we spent.:shake:

The best move you've made was to become part of this Forum:thumbs:

Here you will find out from all the great people on this site how to make the camera do just what you hoped for when you bought it.

Stick with it and YOU will turn out photo'o as good as anyone on this Forum with time:woot:

Did you use "save for web" to reduce it to the upload size? that strips out exif.

All you need to do is crop the original to a small size and post again which should show the exif :)

OK, well it looks like there is light getting into the box so that's a start. Just not enough of it.

Have you any idea what settings you were using at the time Av Tv M? I'm wondering if you had it on M for manual. (I've done it myself so that's why I'm guessing) A combination of small aperture and fast shutter speed means that not a lot of light gets in, hence very dark images. I can see some light in it so I'm thinking underexposure.

Some exif would sort it for sure.

Try taking a couple at f4 1/100sec and although they may be a bit dull indoors you should get something out of it!

Nil desperandum, we'll fix it!

Thank you all sooooooooo much, I feel like a right thicko!! I will get there in the end I hope!! I will try some shots again tomorrow. . .I have a whole day off so I can fiddle all day!!!

Hi Jens

At least you are in the right place to ask, I know some places that would definitely NOT be so helpful and friendly as everyone is here.

Don't be too downhearted, I am supposed to know what I am doing and as all my bantam chicks were on the lawn a few minutes ago as opposed to in the woods or flowerbeds thought I would take some pictures. I am still going though them but so far I have three out of 24 (and was feeling fed up so came to see what was happening in the forum). It is a long time since my success rate was so bad but the little monsters move so fast and it was v. dark as just about to rain, which was why I stopped so that is going to be my excuse for today.

Hope we both do better tomorrow :D
