What Adsl modem router?

Hi

Does he have normal adsl or infinity? Does he need a dual band or single band router?

This may help with suggestions.

Thanks

normal ADSL and I don't suppose duel band would go wrong

Dual band is a bit more expensive. As it is a standard ADSL, and if they have items that are 2.4ghz, any cheap modem will do. I use a netgear dg834gt which is old and works just fine.

I'm told you can try plugging the router into the Test Socket (found under the cover on the main telephone socket) and get your provider to test the connection that way.

I use a dirt cheap TD modem/router attached to a lovely Asus RT- N66 router, there are even better spec routers available now, far more stable and feature equipped than your standard isp router, but you do pay for quality.

The line has been tested but we're not sure if they are spinning us a story

Have you tried disabling the Belkin router WiFi and testing with a computer strictly connected via ethernet?

As suggested, connecting the router via the test socket is also a good idea as it rules out any "internal" wiring issue.

Without testing in that manner there's too many variables at play to sensibly work out where the issue is.

If that yields the same results then it's really got to be down to one of the following:

  • Faulty router/modem
  • Some kind of fault that is the ISPs responsibility
  • Actual limitation of the line (You can maybe have a look and see what the BT Checker estimates the line should sync at [not conclusive but might be indicative])

In terms of recommending an ADSL router, I think the Billion 8800NL is particularly good on longer ADSL lines so that might help quite a bit on the WAN side of things, however its WiFi performance is poor so I'd use it as a modem only and bridge it to something a bit better (like a ASUS-RT-N66U).

PC is connected direct to ethernet
As above, line has been tested external and internal

Jim,

Have a look on gumtree in your area if someone is selling a cheap one to try, if you were local (I am in NW London) I would be more than happy to pass one on.

Thanks, generous offer, will have a look!

Hi Jim,
I had problems with my ADSL line and tried a TP modem/router which I sent back after a couple of hours (kept dropping line).
I bought a Billion router as they have a reputation for hanging on even in poor signal areas. They also have lots of configuration options (tuning s/n ratio for one).
It also provided a Giga bit router which doesn't affect internet speeds (Mb) but was useful for the rest of my network.
My suggestion would be to have a look at a site like broadbandbuyer and see what they recommend/ read user reviews but it's a bit of a lottery.
If you order from a well known on-line retailer, you can always send it back if it doesn't work as you expected.

Another vote for billion as well. Mine is the 7800N. I managed to triple my broadband download speed on adsl by tweaking the thing.

Very good in low speed areas.

Thanks guys!

Anything Draytek, Dual WAN. We have these implemented in several business and home environments.

They aren't cheap though, or not as cheap as anything consumer grade such as Netgear or Billion.

Indeed. Works very well on a stable line. Pretty useless though on a line where you want to extract the best possible performance as the chipset won't let you tube it beyond what draytek wants to give you access to.

UPDATE: Fibre is being installed in the street in the next two weeks so that is going to solve the issue :)

Good timing and many thanks all

I have a friend who needs to replace his modem/router so need advice. I'm cable so a bit out of touch with these.

Is this any good?

I have this Netgear 750N http://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-DGN...8&qid=1457028395&sr=8-1&keywords=netgear+750n

used it for maybe a month and it was great router. But now got sky fibre and will be looking to sell (at great price of around £55 posted) it as have no use for it now. Let me know if you would be interested :)
