Hi,
well it has been some week or so, it all started the weekend before last when I decided to sell my 500mm lens, I know I had had it advertised for a while but I finally bit the bullet and said to heck with it I'll let it go with the ultimate intention of buying a used 300mm F2.8 IS IF I could find one, well with the 500mm it being sold I then had a thought at selling my 1D Mark II as I had missed the 1.6x crop factor for wildlife and decided to have a look at a 40D or possibly a 50D. Well I picked CT's brains ( didn't take long ... to reply I mean
) and with his thoughts on his 50D and it kind of made my mind up that if I could find one at a decent price I would try and get one and use it as a backup to the 1D Mark II if I decided to keep that, if not then the 50 would be my main body and the 1D would be sold.
Wouldn't you know it a week past Monday (5th) a 40D came up for sale S/H so I jumped on it as it was a good price and with the imminent prices rises forecast for Monday the 12th and the Cashback on the 40D ending too I thought better to buy one now and not after the 12th. So now I had a 40D and the 1D Mark II, bloomin' heck a 50D appeared on EOS Classifieds at a good price too so I decided to buy that as well, in the space of 3 days I had gone from a 1D Mark II body to 3 bodies, jeez the bank balance was going to be a lot lighter once these were paid for
Now my plans had taken another turn, I had in my kit the 40D, the 1D Mark II and the 500mm lens ( not posted yet as I was awaiting clearance on the cheque ), what was I going to do, I knew I couldn't, didn't want to keep all three bodies so I had to sell at least one if not two of them. I also needed a birding lens for the short term as I knew I would go mad not being able to get out and shoot wildlife, although I do own a 70-200 F2.8 and 1.4x TC which at a push would have done, but once you've had a big one in your hands it's very difficult to downsize
The thing was with the cheque not cleared I had to get funds back in quickly before my wages dried up, so something had to be done and fast......
In between all this my daughter's car insurance bill had arrived and with her going back to college and only working part time, you know who has to pay for that
Right, I thought, once the 40D arrives I'll test it and see if I think it's worth holding onto, note at this point too that I still didn't have my mitts on the 50D for a direct comparison between all three, so it was between the 40D and the 1D for now. Ok I knew without even trying the 40 it couldn't compete with the handling and the ruggedness of the Mark II, however that wasn't why I wanted a crop body, I have to admit that with my 500mm lens the 40 was excellent, light, fast and the AF on it was pretty good, not Mark II standards for speed but pretty good all the same. So that kind of made my mind up, the 50 would be a keeper as I figured ( with CT's help ) that it would be even better than the 40. Right I'll sell the 40D, job done, then I can test between the Mark II and the 50 when it comes, all I need now is a long lens to replace the 500mm Siggy, Ok I thought I have to lower my standards from the Siggy prime and maybe look at a Canon 400mm F5.6L or 100-400L IS zoom, so I put a wanted advert up here and in Avforums along with POTN for either of those lens', and would you believe it a 400mm prime was offered within a day, I couldn't believe it, of all the years I have been on here and other photo Forums I have only ever seen a handful up for sale and funnily enough two of them just a few weeks ago, so I bought that too, now I had 3 bodies and a 400m lens, pressure was on to get rid of something and fast!
Another option came along, a mate at work mentioned his wife would like a DSLR, ok I said how about a 30D, now you're asking yourself where the hell did I pull that one from, well it is my dad's I thought I could sell that and give him the 40 as a replacement and get back most of what I paid for the 40. Deal done so I now only had the 50D and the 400mm on their way and the Mark II in my bag, mind you I had advertised a couple of days before and I had an offer made within 48 hours, so that was sold as well.
Which brings me to today, my mate collected the 30D, my dad picked up the 40D and I posted the Mark II and the postie brought me the 400mm F5.6L, the 500m gets posted tomorrow to it's new owner as the cheque is supposed to clear then.
I hope you aren't all asleep now
So to summarise, I've sold £2600 worth of gear, bought two new bodies and a new lens ( well new to me anyway ), paid for two car insurances ( mine was due too ) and left ourselves with £95 so it's out for a slap up meal tonight PHEW!!
Wait a minute though..... I've just been told the rabbit needs 'done' so it might just be a KFC tonight as the vets bill will be £70, bloody hell I want his baws chapped aff not full body plastic surgery
:bang:
Photography, sometime I think taking the photo is the easy part
Thanks for taking the time to read, I hope you enjoy it, took me ages to type,
See ya,
Mike.
