How stupid are some people!!! Guy goes into the garage and puts on one of those plastic gloves to fill up his diesel car... As the counter hits £25 he realises its unleaded!!!!

Despite us having 1 of each fuel for most of the last 12 years or so, and never doing this before, I put the wrong fuel in (and we now have 2 diesels so no excuse!). Am now running a dual fuel car!
 
Ouch.

Always dread doing that tbh.

`Recovery` service? Free?
 
Been there done that. £25 unleaded in my Toyota. I brimmed it, another £35, and limped 7 miles home. Pumped out and changed filters. No harm done but now got nearly 50 litres of 5 to 2 diesel mix and it's taking a long time to drop the odd 5 litres every fill up!
 
No, just topped up with diesel and drove ok. Other way round is more serious!

It may seem, likes it's driving okay, but you could still be doing damage to the engine. I would still get the tank pumped out, refill and hope that you've done no long term damage.
 
Had a diesel as a demonstrator today,never had a diesel before. Had to put some diesel in it and was absolutely paranoid about it!
So you've decided to kill the planet :) Join the club.

Checked with my logistics manager who is responsible and he suggested what I did above.
 
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but petrol in a diesel causes big and expensive problems as it washes the lubricant out of the diesel pump and injector system. I'd suggest you get it drained immediately! Diesel oil will wash through a petrol engine with just a bit of smoke and nuisance. Not vice versa!

Never used a diesel pump yet that didn't leave my hand stinking of it.

I drive a diesel van, have done for umpteen years and one of the reasons I drive a diesel car is because I just know I would do the same as the OP at some point.

Splashes etc get on there, doesn't evaporate off like petrol so just accumulates.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but petrol in a diesel causes big and expensive problems as it washes the lubricant out of the diesel pump and injector system. I'd suggest you get it drained immediately! Diesel oil will wash through a petrol engine with just a bit of smoke and nuisance. Not vice versa!

There is no lubricant in the pump or injector save the fuel and the presence of a small amount of petrol will not do any harm, the very presence of a liquid is enough. It can theoretically seep through gaps which it otherwise wouldn't and get into places it shouldn't, like the engine oil, however the chances of it being in any significant proportion are slim.

Maybe someone should test the emissions and suggest it to VAG...

Ah right. Today was the first time I've used one and it seemed fine.
 
Been there done it - just changed from Petrol to diesel - Filled up ( 70 litres of unleaded) and drove it away and it stopped!!!!!!!! I'd had the car a week .Landrover call it a stage 4 misfuel which is basically a replacement of the total fuel system injectors the works- Bill £4500 !!!!!!! Luckily LV my insurers picked up the bill but they'll only do it once.
I am totally paranoid now when filling up - its not nice
 
I've been there, popped some petrol in my diesel. The petrol station wasn't happy with me refusing to move my vehicle. I had it recovered, pumped out, new fuel filter etc.

Especially with modern diesels it is not a good idea not to get that done.

Don't think so, fuel pumps usually rely on the diesel as a lubricant. £25 worth of petrol is a lot that could seriously dilute the diesel, causing the pump to wear and can also destroy seals in the fuel system. Putting diesel in a petrol will just mean it won't start or may smoke depending on how much.

It's serious in a new car. The diesel lubricates the engine as well.

That said, I did exactly the same a few years ago. Got from London to Nottingham before it died on the slip road of j24. Was seriously lacking in power and used most of a tank on the way. Filled back up and carried on
 
I drive diesel for work and petrol for pleasure, so far I haven't filled either with the wrong fuel,
but I was under the impression that one of the nozzles didn't fit the wrong filler unless that has changed

This is something I would do. I'm amazed I haven't done it yet. The test will come when I get a diesel van in the near future.
 
A couple of months after I'd bought my first diesel car I managed to put some unleaded in it! I was always so careful but on this occasion it was late at night, I was tired and in a hurry.

Thankfully I realised after 8 litres of unleaded (fuel light had just come on before I stopped for fuel) so I just filled it up to the brim with diesel and kept topping it up when I hit the 3/4 tank mark for the next few weeks.

I'm sure I read somewhere that in very cold countries you need to add a little unleaded to diesel otherwise it "waxes", it could be nonsense but that's the principle I used and 4 years later it seems OK :)

I don't understand this - I have both types.

Diesel nozzle is Black, Unleaded is Green. There's a big sticker inside the petrol flaps saying UNLEADED or DIESEL

Sorry if you can't think enough whilst you fill up your tank, then should you really be driving if you can be so easily distracted?

Not in mine. Apparently a blocker pops out from somewhere and stops the nozzle going in and (IIRC) the wrong fuel getting down its throat. There's a tool in the boot to reset the blocker should one try to misfuel.

You'd think petrol would be round nozzles and diesel square or something wouldnt you , so simple and no more errors. (once the car manufacturers match the filler caps up)

Or, [sensible?] put RFID chips in every filler hole and corresponding doohickeys in the pump nozzles so it is impossible to misfuel. [/sensible?].

Or cheaper go the hire car route of a sticker saying which it is right on the cap. Although sure they'd still be plenty that manage to miss it staring them in the face.
 
If I did this by accident I would just drive it away from the pump and call the AA I am sure on there recent blurb they offer the free service to members of draining the tank.
