You can't underestimate the usefulness of this forum. I joined around 2 months ago and in this time I've gone from having a 450d with just the kit lens to:

7d
18-135mm kit
17-50mm tamron
70-300 IS USM
50mm 1.8
Sigma 30mm 1.4
Sigma 10-20mm
430 ex Speedlite II
Wireless remote trigger

All of the above from reading about people reccomendations. I've also gone from taking average photos like this:

all thanks to other posters, people making C&C, looking at other photos and the C&C they get and general recommendations by people. This week I had help from another forum member to create some bubbles for me to add to this pic as a christmas present to my wife. This is a great community where strangers help strangers and I'd like to send a big thanks to anyone who has ever posted anything on this site, it's been a great 2 months of improvement!

I'd agree with everything you said. I bought a D60 with kit lens 6 months ago swearing I'd never need another lens, I now have 6 of them along with a D90 and hundreds of pounds of lighting equipment and accessories.

I've grown to absolutely love it, and it's all down to this place.

agreed... fantastic place! from starting out to full on specialist topics its got the lot!....altho the mrs does not agree as she has become a bit of a photography widow....lol also not very good for the wallet either.
 
Yeah, I'd say when the wife realises how much I spent she might not share the same sentiments as me!
 
2 months you say? Right... I make that 5 weeks left then... :D

Mind you, in the first three weeks I have already been seduced away from Canon by Nikon, spent wads on new glass and reflectors/stands and had a fearsome time of it keeping the bottom line away from Mrs A's eyes! I have to say though, it's fun and as said, very illuminating and educational too. (Even nudged into developing my own films again after 25 years away!)

Excellent thread. Great improvements, spot-on comments about the helpfulness of the community, and loving MD's bubbles! (I'd also like to add my thanks to all those who have helped me during the last few months, whether by offering advice, answering questions or just selling me their old gear :D)
 
In two months you seem to have been a fast learner and cracked it, next thing to do is......






change over to Nikon gear :thumbs:

What an amazing improvement Joe, I agree with your comment about this forum. I had a 5D and 50mm and in the last couple of months, I got 3 L lens, monopod, 430II, lots of strobe gears. The for sale section has totally cleared out my wallet :bonk:

The lighting setup was one 430EXII on the top of my 7d using the sigma 30mm a about aperture 7, 250 shutter speed and around 250 ISO I think.

I just put a white bedsheet up over my TV and then made the background pure white in PS. I don't have a studio so it's not studio quality, just the best I could do with the materials I had
 
What a transformation, Joe! I couldn't agree more. I'd never have progressed to where I am now with my work if it wasn't for this place. It's a constant source of inspiration.

There's a massive improvement in your pictures, well done :clap:

Nice touch with the processing of the sheet, the last two are :clap::clap:. It must show other newbies what can be achieved with a little hard work, TP and a the most important bit gear lust:naughty:

Yep, the Rubber-Ducky pic is awesomely good... I'd cite that and 'bubbles' as near-perfect examples of home-produced 'baby-pics' - very impressive...
 
I'm so glad I opened this thread with the missus lurking about as she wants me to do some bubble shots now :( I replied it wont work after they reach their fifth birthday, Excellent shots mate just shows what you can achieve with the right attitude and the place for the best photography advice on the net :thumbs:

Aye, this forum is great....but the wife may not think so!

Thing is, those shots you capture, they're for life - you cant put a price on that.
 
I can't stress how great this forum is - I love it. I actually joined about a year or so ago but didn't post much at all, didn't really have the time or much to say at the time. I've been posting a lot more recently and learned a great deal, for which I say thankyou to all who have helped!

Of course you can. £25 for the session, with a free 8x6. Any additional photos are available from your session, starting at £25 unframed and £60 framed! :D

See? Easy!

Cheers! The bubble pic was all planned out and thanks to MD for the bubbles but the bath pic was just a quick grab to try out my 30mm 1.4 the day I got it. I had no idea how sharp and vivid it had come out till I took a look later that day - was lucky with that one - but I think the more practice you get you start to inherently know what settings to set the camera up with before you start and can grab more pics like this a lot more often.
 
Did you add the bubbles in PS?

I hope I can improve like that, I seem to spend hours on here, reading, looking at pictures, looking at the different settings etc.

Dont think my wife will let me buy all that extra gear though !!

You have to take some pics that she really likes then when she is wowing over them, thats when you talk about extra gear!
