I'm lucky enough to be going to Strone in Scotland on Sept 27. Staying in a house right on Loch Long.
I'm looking for recommendations for places to visit, and landscape views.

I've ever visited Scotland before, and want to take advantage of being there whilst I'm able to.

Appreciate any useful input.
Thanks. :-)

Inveraray is nice and not too far. The jail tour is worth it and if you have a dog they are allowed in as well. The George Hotel does nice food and the staff have always been great.

No dog, but added to the list. Thanks :-)

Confused me, there’s a Strone on the edge of Loch Ness near Castle Urquhart too.

You could call at Ardkinglas Woodland Garden on the way to Inveraray. Call into Loch Fyne Oysters if you like seafood or the garden centre next door for a tea/coffee.

Thanks, all.
Looks like Inversely jail is worth a stop. :-)

Will they be awful in October?

I usually think of late September being about the end of the midge season, or at least their impact is becoming less. However, if there is a warm spell, especially if its warm and wet then the little dears could still be around.

I'd definitely take some midge repellent. My current favourite is Smidge. https://www.smidgeup.com/
IMO it is just about as good as the DEET based products but does not have the unpleasant side effect of DEET - stinging eyes, numbing lips and melting some plastics(which could be bad news for cameras and spectacles).

Be prepared for any weather - I've been in T shirt and shorts in February and have seen a month's rain in one day in May.

Hope you have a great time.

Dave

A useful resource for anyone who hasn't visited Scotland before (and also for those who have) is the excellent Walkhighlands site - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/

It has details of lots of walks from very gentle strolls to mountain ascents all over Scotland. It is useful, I think, even for non-walkers as every walk description has photos which give a good idea of what can be seen.

Thanks Dave.

Best way to avoid insect bites is to take someone tastier (to the bitey beasties) than oneself.

Failing that, SSS works for me.

For the dreaded midge Avon Skin so Soft works too, also keeps your skin soft, at least that’s what SWMBO tells me.
Have used this on many visits during midge season. Was very effective.

On the subject of midges.. just back form a week or so west scotland.. Oban, Isle of Mull and Fort William... this is our third Scotland Holiday having done the east to middle side (a9) up to John O Groats with a few days in Inverness for the dolphins etc.. and back down west side (a 82) for a couple of weeks... Also been invarrary for Highland games.... Been all over scotland in either June or July

Not met one single midge.. ever!

There must be something about you they don't like then. Can't be because you are a Canon user. maybe it's because your from Accrington;)

Has a mod even been reported? :)
I'm pretty sure I hold the record for the most reported mod (y)

But Nod's not a mod :p

Exachly!

And yes, mods have been reported.

Question is....are deep fried battered Mars bars a real thing?

Oh Yes, along with deep fried pizza.

Kilchurn Castle is just beyond Inverary as well - Loch Awe.

Loch Eck is lovely when the conditions play ball, you'll find some lovely little jettys and boats up and down the area.

The deep fried Mars bars are better than you imagine - I've only had one but was surprised its not the worst thing in the world.
Yes, Kilchurn castle is definitely on my list, thanks.

we were in Oban, Mull and around there in May and the Midges were terrible. we live Dumfries area and they can be quite bad here sometimes too. Smidge is good.

Deep fried Curly Wurly… IIRC the best chippy for deep fried confectionery is in Leith so East rather than West coast (but might be worth a trip!!!)
