WESTERN DIGITAL 2TB External HDD - £ 56.09 del

now only 48.99 so yes a very good deal

i' not sure i'd want that many pics on one drive tho - its like having all your eggs in one basket - tho i supose so long as its backed up elsewhere

you need to buy two of them, you should NEVER have just one copy of your photos. Backing up is so, so important, and so cheap these days :)

Now only £43.99 Does anyone know if it is powered by usb i.e. totally portable with a laptop? Checked the site and specs and it doesn't state if its mains powered or usb powered.

I'm 99.9999% certain it needs mains power supply. I've seen this model style spec'd as such elsewhere. The give-away is on the 2nd image of it, where you can see the power socket next to the USB socket.

Ah yes, I have just looked at the second image and there is a power socket on the back. Well spotted

Shame I was after a low price usb powered one really. However at that price for that size drive it is very tempting.

I read the review after I posted last too Craig. It confirms it's mains powered and also said it's very heavy.

You might want to keep an eye on Aldi and Lidl, more so Aldi, as they often have decently priced portable units. You might even be lucky enough to find some reduced for clearance at a local store too.

Another option is to watch PC World. They offer discounted web prices with in-store collection.

I never thought of Aldi or Lidl will keep an eye on them. I tend to steer clear of PC world if I can help it though (bad experience in the past).

That is soo true.
I have bought one of these off the eBay last year, for approx 90 GBP.
I have copied all my musics, movies, pictures I have collected the last 6-7 years. The hard drive was working very well without any faults. Until my girlfriend wanted to watch some movie, and decided to connect it to her notebook.
Off course it didn`t work, because it needs AC power, it doesn`t get enough just through the USB cable. So she decided to look for a power plug.
(All my chargers, cables are in a box and unfortunately, I didn`t label the power plugs. :bonk:)
In the first round she ruled out the Western Digital one, because it looked like a phone charger. Finally she found out that her notebook chargers plug fits in the WD-s hole, and she connected the two. :bang::bang:

Since then I have no memories left from the last 6-7 years.

Last month I have found a friend of mine who can possibly recover the data from the damaged hard drive.

Long story short - note to myself:
1. Never buy just only one hard drive especially if you want to back up loads of datas.
2. Never let your girlfriend/wife work alone with your "memories".
3. Label your most important cables/plugs.

there's a chance that it was just the internal circuit board doing the usb to sata conversion that got fried. A small chance, but a chance nonetheless - try pulling the drive out of the case and using an adapter or try putting it in a desktop computer.

that and, please, everyone, please please please back your stuff up!

Cheers for trying to help, but the hard drive is not in my hands now.
I hoped the same, bought another case, but it didn`t work.
I went to a local PC service, to see if they can do stg with it.
It toasted their sata to usb adapter as well. :(
They said if I can get the same type of hard drive and swap its circuit board, then probably I can get the old one to work.
This was the point when I found a friend of mines buddy is a PC wizard, and is able to do such a hard drive recovery like the Kürt Kft.

Anyway, I don`t want to hijack this thread, nor advertising the company above, just spreading the word: Always back up your important stuff!

ah bad luck :(

And I'll recommend the WD hard drives, I've got stacks of them, work great :)

4) as these drives are so cheap get an extra one and seperate photos from music/movies so that photos arent on the drive the wimmin in your life are likely to mess with

Oh yeah an re 2) its also not a good idea to let the wife and girlfreind work together with your expensive electronics

I have the Western Digital 500GB HDD - it is mains powered. Performs faultlessly - and it cost more than this one:bang:

I use it in conjunction with a Maxtor USB drive on my Mac;)

for those that do need usb power pixmainia have this for 35 notes

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/2763421/art/seagate/expansion-500-gb-2-5-port.html

okay its 'only' 500GB ie 25% of the WD mains powered drive - but 500GB is still a shedload of file space (my principal USB drive is only 80Gb and its only two thirds full)

Having not used Pixmania for about 10 years I thought I would have a dabble with this external drive
added it to basket fill the forms/details to join etc and the bill goes up to just short of £68
with some membership or other in the basket and another caddy for the same drive I could live with the £7 postage but the other stuff has me rather baffled
no way to remove it and a little confused

are they selling the hard drive seperate from the caddy on the sly then adding the caddy as extra at the payout stage

it very much appears to be the case been through it 3 times now and given up... cant be Rsed with all that malarkey any more

Do Pixmania stil sell EU products and send you an Euro->UK power adaptor?

States on the page for this drive:

'This product requires a mains adapter for the UK. Pixmania supplies a free adapter when you buy this product.'

Where have you seen it for £43.99 I can only see it at £48.99

Thanks. I will keep them on my 'Do not buy from list' then :D

No earth on the power adaptor. I wouldn't mind if it was simply a figure 8 lead, but it isn't

The power adapters that come with the UK versions of these hard drives have a plastic earth pin anyway.

Why, what is wrong with the EU-UK adapter?

It makes an external hard disk less portable and it clutters up busy power points.
The EU product codes don't help resale or support either.

Hmm, that makes sense.
However I have just used it as an external hard drive, and not as a portable.
It is too big for running around with it. :)

I had a hard drive from western digital, but an internal one, to cut a long story short it broke, I got in touch with western digital as all there hard drives were guaranteed for five years I gave them the numbers of the back and they sent me a new one, I replaced the circuit boards with the new one and it worked fine all the data was saved, I was supposed to send the old one back but I never did apparently they don’t keep a record and just ask you to send it back for some reason.
