Hi All,

does anyone know the best / cheapest place for buying some wescott softboxes looking at getting a 50x50 or maybe 2

Cheers

Craig

Cheapest way would be to import them from somewhere like B&H, even with the duties it'll probably still work out about £100-150 cheaper than buying them in the UK....

The UK prices for them are ridiculous - I did a bulk import of Wescott items for TP members last year from B&H, and it was a good saving over any prices here, even with the duty and VAT. FITP might be able to remember what he got his 50" Wescott for through that buy..... or was it a 28"?

Edit: Just checked and on an order of £366 I paid a total of £81.64 duty/VAT + £11 UPS broker charge making a total of £458 for the B&H order, so you can work out what the import/vat will be - you'll always have the broker charge on top.

Ordering a 50" Apollo from B&H $374 (£236 according to xe.com) vs Creative Video £245 at todays exchange rate saves £10. (Using B&H's cheapest shipping option)

B&H now add duty & vat during the order process, so you get to see the full price.

They break it down as this

* VAT: $50.11
* Duties: $7.53
* Other Taxes: $0.00
* Brokerage: $0.00
* Disbursement: $17.39
* Security & Handling: $5.01
* Carrier Surcharge: $15.00
* Total: $95.04

You do get the option to not have them add this and handle it, in the hope of not getting caught this end or taking care of it yourself but to be fair, the savings aren't huge.

It was the 28" version I bought, I'd love the 50" but it's a huge sum of money for what is essentially just a (very) big umbrella....

It's a real shame B&H now include the duty in the price. I bought from them in October 2008 and including the duty/handling/vat I paid the prices below:

Westcott 50″ APOLLO JS £150.18
Westcott APOLLO SPEEDLIGHT KIT 28″ £78.34

maybe worth trying to get together a bulk order maybe???

Worth a try - I'd do it but don't have the up front cash now to get it going again.... a few who ordered last time asked to be informed if ordering again, and I'd be happy to supply the list to maybe bump up the order a bit.

I'm looking at getting a 28" at the moment, i might be interested in going in on the bulk order if the price was right.

Nor would i have the cash upfront but i am sure someone might be willing to organise it

I'd be interested in participating in a bulk buy for both 28 and 50.

WEX have the 28 for 12 and the 50 for 250 in the uk, so I reckon they'll drop a little as more and more suppliers pick them up

he says he's a westcott UK reseller and I only know 2 places, assuming he's a third it would be handy to know

Ah, ok.....

What is the difference between the Westcott 28" Recessed Front Apollo (2334) and the Westcott 28" Recessed Front Apollo - Flash Kit (2331)? Is one constructed differently for use with speedlights?

From the description - It would suggest:

the (2334) is the 28" Apollo ONLY (you supply the stand and umbrella fitting of your choice)

the (2331) is the 28" Apollo + Stand + bracket

Thats how I read it......

JP Distribution became a UK Distro earlier this year for the Wescott brand.
As I have had a trade account with JP for many years, I was asked if I wanted to start and sell the products.

Due to the low stock levels in the UK, I have not really pushed this product on our website but if anyone would like to purchase Wescott products and dont want them like "yesterday", I am more than happy to order them for you.

Here is a Link to the latest Price List

I've been looking at ordering some Westcott stuff from b&h myself so I don't mind trying to organise a group buy instead where I can save everyone a decent sum of money from the UK retailer prices as long as theres something in it for me? I would probably look to order maybe half a dozen or so 28" sets (thats the softbox with umbrella adaptor) and 10 or so 50" softboxes but I would need genuine interest.

Hey Kman,

I'll put my hat in the ring for the 50"

Hi Guys,

Just some feedback of my experience with Wescott kit.

I've just bought the Wescott 28" Softbox kit from Premier Ink http://SPAM/2w9vgye.

After unpacking it and having a play I am very happy with the Softbox itself, but I have to admit that for the price, the stand is very average. It feels a little more flimsy than I expected and it is of OK build quality. But, there are better stands for a very similar price. As a kit, with the bit of discount you get as a kit price, I am happy I have a good set up, but if I was doing this again I would look for a different stand.

For example based on other stands I now own:
The Wescott 4 section light stand at £33, http://SPAM/39lkzr7, is ok, but I know that for a few more pounds there are much better quality stands out there. My Lencarta General Purpose (£30) and Air Cushoined (£39) are of a much, much better quality and I am more confident they could stand (pardon the pun) up to much more abuse.

I would defiantly place Wescott equipment, especially the modifiers on my list when researching any other stuff I may get in the future. I just may think again before I buy a kit set up.

This is my view on the equipment I have. I am sure there are other Kit out there others would recommend based on their own experiences.

I have to agree - I bought a so-called air cushioned light stand from eBay for £25 for my Lencarta 300 head. It was only air cushioned when there was nothing on it though, and the build quality was cheap and tatty - promptly sent it back for a refund and ordered one from Garry at Lencarta. For an extra £14 there is just no comparison; none whatsoever....

I bought 28" Westcott studio kit from Adorama.com.
I paid £32 of tax, vat etc + the Adorama price.
The kit was still £50 cheaper than any UK price I checked on line.
The stuff is of good quality, but one needs to be careful whilst transporting etc as it may damage quite easily (at least it looks like it). If you are careful it will serve years.
I got it with 43" Halo and 40" reflector, really happy with everything and Adorama service, 3 days after order placement it was delivered to UK:thumbs:

it's showing as £122

:thinking:

Well, I got my 28" apollo kit delivered today. Setup couldn't be simpler - literally an umbrella type push up. I had heard that it was fiddly to alter the speedlite settings between exposures and that's perfectly true..........if you call undoing a velcro strip fiddly. I only had chance to play with it for a few minutes but in that time it made a big difference to my results. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product - just remember to order a light stand as well. £101 including delivery.
