Yes
I was having a chat with my brother last night and it got me thinking. I dont need mine reaallly...but i kept thinking i dont think i would be able to sell it. Yet most people buy their camera with one and then move on to something else...

Is there a massive storage of old kit lenses somewere just gathering dust?

There is a massive storage of camera kit in general, I suspect you'll find most of the members here have a couple of lenses and a few old cameras that don't very often if ever see the light of day.

There is a pretty decent market for second hand kit lenses especially if you have the newer canon IS version.

i have the IS version but my mum uses it and i wouldnt take it off her for fear of loosing my hands :D.

Whats the value on the non IS?

you maybe able to get 20-30 quid for it, I got £20 for an ancient silver kit lens from an EOS300 which makes the 18-55 digital kit lens look like an L series!

Only have the 400D's kit lens atm so haven't had anything to compare it to that will show it up, are they really as bad as folk say? I've not had any real outstanding photo's yet but thats mainly down to me more than the lens I think.

Hopefully buying a new lens at the end of the month so will have some sort of comparison to it's quality then albeit at different focal lengths.

i had the kit lens with my 40d(17-85IS)

i replaced it with the 24-70 sigma and never use the 17-85, i keep it to keep the kit box complete or in case i get a 2nd camera(one for me, one for the missus)

thats what i thought of doing... if i get a second body or just keep it somewere incase something else breaks.

For the skae of £20 i would rather keep it, its a good snapshot lens

I flogged mine from my original 300D a few weeks ago for about 30 quid but only once I covered its focal length. Couldn't see the point in having it hanging around to be honest.

only ever had two kit lenses, one was with my D40x and one was a 18-135 which i bought seperate, always get body only now when i get them, saves the bundle

I'm still using my 18-55 IS that came with the 450d, Although I would like to replace it and get less barrel distortion and more overlap with the 55-250, it's not happening anytime soon.

I have had two kit lenses since i started.
I got the original 18-55 lens with my 350d, sold on ebay for over £40
I got the 17-85is with my 40d, and sold it for £180

People will buy them to replace broken ones (the 18-55 is quite cheaply built if i remember correctly) or as with the 17-85is, as a replacement for their 18-55  (or maybe to cover a wider range or as a walk about. I didnt like the CA from it personally compared to the 17-70 Sigma that my misses was using)

BUT ......it still churns out some nice landscapes for half the price of a kit lens

i cant really afford anything to replace it right now or in the near future as i only have 7 weeks until my departure to the beautifull sunshine, but i still wish i had that walkaround focal length covered.

Could trade my 10-20 to be fair, but then beautifull island which is a big mountain could make for interesting landscapes.... i dont like photography sometimes

I bought a Canon 17-85mm IS to replace my kit lens as I thought the extra focal length would make it better as a general walkabout lens.
Most of my photography is done outside which is fine as the 17-85 is a bit slow and not the best in lowlight.
I decided to keep the kit lens so I could sell it with the 450D when I eventually upgrade to a 50D.

My kit lens gets the most use!

I shoot a lot of flowers, and the 18-55mm is perfect for it. Its also good for wide angle stuff. Well ok, not exactly "wide angle", but more so than my 50mm :)

oh for sure its a great lens but obviously sometimes a fast zoom or that focal variety would be nice. But i can use the 70-200 for lots of shots just cant stand to close to people

I'm at the other end of the scale. A few months ago bought a standard non IS kit lens off here and modified the mounting so it would attach to my 10D. It was the best way I could get the 18-28 range covered at a very low cost. TBH it is a great lens for the money (about £35 IIRC)

Now need to move the 10D on and am undecided whether to bundle the lens or keep it.

:agree: I use mine for all sorts of things.

Mine is actually my second 18-55mm. My first one was sold as part of the package when I sold my 350D. But I missed the lens so much I bought this one I have now from Marcel :D

I need to make friends with my kits lens. I have spent the last 5 weeks wondering what the point of it is while i have been playing with my other lenses.

Have only used mine for a couple of months before selling it for about £35. There's a gap in my lens range between 20 and 35mm but it doesn't bother me to be honest. I have my legs for that. It was just gathering dust so I opted to sell it to get some money towards other gear.

wel i had a plan a few weeks ago, sell the 300D, buy a brand new unwanted 40D and look for a decent 17-85 or similar, this i did and all was well, then i spotted a siggy 70-200 2.8 that wack61 was selling, bought that, saved up a bit more cash and low and behold......some kind gent did me a fantastic deal on a 1D mk11 ! it was such a good deal i thought i could still afford a half decent lens.....then he showed me a virtually unused siggy 50-500 4-6.3, then i saw a bag, then a filter, then another bag........i still need a decent short lens !

I sold my canon 18-55 is on ebay last week and got £72.00.

Maybe some people keep theirs for when they upgrade their body - and can sell their old one with a lens?
