And took around 90 pictures, and i cant say i liked a single one of them, Bare in mind it was my first time using my camera out doors, But I dunno, I guess with it still being partly winter everything looks the same in a sense. Hmm :bang:

Hi DJ.
Where did you go?
Post a few pics and perhaps you may get a few pointers! I get out to most of the places around here, mostly on a Wednesday.
Have you tried Pennington Flash? Or Mere Sands Woods? Both free (apart from parking) and have excellent hides.

Well first off don't be downhearted - if it was your first time out then you are still getting to grips with everything so shouldn't expect too much of yourself.

Secondly it sounds like part of the problem is being able to see an interesting picture. You say everything looks the same because it is winter - so maybe there is a theme there that you could use i.e. the starkness of winter. Think about how you could show that - maybe B&W conversion would work well, or focusing on a specific subject - like a particular tree - and trying it from lots of different angles / settings. Sometimes you have to get experimental and really delve into what is in front of you rather than taking a shot of the whole scene.

Very true day, I mean yeah it was my first time :) I really enjoyed it though, :D Erm i will get a few piccies up, Dya think it`ll be ok in here or dya recon i should post them in a diff thread on the picturs section?

There, yey i managed to work it out lol but i honestly dont like any of them.

Nope - post em up here and I'm sure you will get some advice.

Stage 1 buy camera.... check

Stage 2 use camera..... check

Stage 3 look at first shots and go:gag:..... check

Stage 4 learn why....... waiting

I like the thistle pic, you've obviously been experimenting with aperture and D.O.F so keep up the good work

I really like number 2.

Maybe a bit of PP to tone done the blown highlights and convert to black and white?

  Learn because my images are crap? lol

No they are not crap, but learning to be self critical is very important . A little PP to some of your shots could make a big difference.

In all honesty it was on auto, I still want to learn about D.o.F and Aperture, I just thought i have a photographers hand book, Why dont i damn well read it

OK, Here we go!
Just MY own thoughts mind you!
#1 Interesting texture in the post but too square on, needs angles. Messy BG.
#2 Same as above.
#3 Focus seems to be on the stem rather than the Teasel head.
#4 The sign does nothing for the scene, slanting horizon, too much sky!
#5 Better! Needs some of the boardwalk cropping in the FG.
#6 Make more of the corner of fence, a step or two back could have made a lot of difference, center the corner post in the first third, and, get it straight!
#7 The Ivy is too distracting, the angle on the steps is good though, take the eye from left to right, again a step back may have helped.

With a little more attention to composition/lines/thirds, you will get there!
Keep up the practice and learn from the others on here!

Exactly. Just experiment. And try to copy other pictures and eventually you'll develop your own style.

Practice though.

:agree:

For number 5 try a shot kneeling down, see what sort of effect the change in viewpoint has.

Thank you , I know tbh today I was just having a dig in really, some may call it breaking the ice.

Tbh i didnt really like the location, but all n all I`m happy with what I got but think i could do better:)

But thanks all the best, Also how do i resize them?

a good start
you seem to like detail
composition and what to do with a unhelpful sky need attention
cheers

Hi DJ,

Just some quick comments on your pics if I may.

They are not necessarily bad at all and you should in no way be downhearted or dismayed with them. In all of them it's easy to see why you've thought it would make a good picture and this is a good thing. The pictures show you're thinking about composition, unfortunately they're let down by uninteresting subjects (like the fence for example).

Not every shot every photographer takes will be a winner. The best thing you can do is keep at it.

My fave is the one of the thistle. If only you'd focussed on the thistle rather than the stem this may of been a good picture with some Post Processing (black and white perhaps with a high contrast). I think with a bit more practice you'll be getting some cracking pictures.

I hope this helps.

yeah, the thistle was rather tall lol i couldnt get to it, I even stud on my ikkle toes to get to it xD tbh though the area that i went to was a bit unsafe because of the recent weather conditons! :bang:

Don't be disheartened mate I have had my camera since September and I don't always like all the pictures I take you will get there in time. The pictures are ok for your first go I still get a bit confused by DOF. Over Christmas to help me understand DOF I placed three marbles in a slight diagonal line and photographed them at different Apertures the ISO was 200 just because that's what the camera was on and I altered the shutter speed accordingly to the exposure.

See i dont understand the exposure etc and i dunno how to alter it, I noticed you have the D3000, good choice lol

time to read the manual and get some starter books in to be more proficient
if you leave it to the camera...you WILL be disappointed...need to be in control before during and after...otherwise all you have is a point and shoot instrument
best of luck with it though
be patient and master one thing at a time
exposure especially
then composition

I am not that clued up mate but here goes if you look at the back screen when the camera is turned on you will see the scale that is the exposure indicator the left side is plus and the right side is minus. If you select M and adjust the settings (shutter speed, aperture and ISO) so set aperture at F5.6 and ISO at 200 for example and adusjt the shutter speed you will see that the scale will go left or right. If the scale is in the centre it is exposed correctly and if the scale goes left it will be over exposed and if it goes right it will be under exposed. I have not read any books on photography and only bought two magazines one of which I didn't read a lot of the other I read a bit of my Dad used to do a lot of photography before my sister or I was born so he nows some stuff or I just try some thing to see what happens if I don't like the picture or it is no good it can always be deleted the best advive I can give you mate is not to be scared and just try different settings to see what happens I hope I have helped a little bit.
