Hi, we are heading to London next weekend to go to the NFL at Wembley. I haven't been to Wembley before so need some advice on Tube stations, tube tickets etc. We are staying near Tower Bridge , what lines would you recommend? Also we are hoping to do The Shard when we are down. Can we pay at the door or should we book? Any advice welcome, thanks.

You can go on the overground (Chiltern line) from Marylebone (get there on the tube) to Wembley, it's a few minutes walk from the station. Since I grew up further out of London on the same line, that's how I always got there for concerts. There are three tube stations in Wembley (Wembley Park, Wembley central and North Wembley) which are all further away that the overground station, but still walkable. The tube lines are all much of a muchness, I like the deep ones with the tiny tunnels and trains, but that's just aesthetic preference. A zone 1-6 travel card will get you anywhere you are likely to want to go on the tube or buses, but doesn't cover the Chiltern line trains.
Apparently it is now possible to use contactless payment cards for tube, buses and most overground trains in London. I haven't been there since this was announced so haven't tried it myself and don't know if it applies to the Chiltern Line as well. From what I remember you can't pay cash on buses any more, you have to have already purchased a ticket (e.g. travel card) or have an Oyster (or NFC bank card per the recent announcement). I'm only an occasional visitor these days so hopefully someone that's local will be along with more definitive information.

Hi guys thanks for the replies. Viv1969, I used to enjoy watching NFL in the eighties on Ch4 but this will be my first time at a full game in a stadium.Not sure what to expect but looking forward to it !

Most people tend to go to Wembley Park. It's a straight walk up from there (you can see the stadium) all the way you walk and is the most famous walk. Jubilee and I think Metropolitan line.
There are often weekend works on the tube, so check your journey on the TFL journey planner (it will plan the fastest route for you).
Get an Oyster car or at least travel cards. Paying cash fares costs you about double and I don't think buses accept cash fares anymore.
The Shard for restaurants / bars you have to book in advance unite a bit (for a table anyway), for the journeys up you can book I believe. I expect sunset etc will be booked up - google them and see.
