evening all,
Off to North Wales on Monday for a weeks R&R. I'm hoping to catch some low flying jets on one of the days. Trouble is since having 2 heart attacks and some stents a couple of years ago, steep hill climbing/long cross country trekking is out of the question. Are there any spots with minimal walking/climbing distance from a car park?? I'm not totally incapable, but its very exhausting
I'll be based just outside Bala, but will travel for the right spot. Any help appreciated, with 6 figure grid refs if possible,
Ta

Cad East is the one for you then. You can drive up the track and then a very slow short steady walk for about 5-10 minutes.
Just make sure you close all of the gates behind you after driving through them and that you don't block the track.
It helps keep the farmer on our side.

Try this for details: http://www.warplane.co.uk/Wales.htm

cad east is down the page.

info on cad East also:

Google the Mach loop.

I'll dig up some info for you when I get home - if nobody responds before.

route is doable but tiring up cad west (which I think is the easiest one), might be worth making sure there will be others up there the day you go or maybe having a recce before hand

I tend to stop for a ciggy half way up and just pootle tbh

Cad East looks good. Good web links there as well.Thanks. Do people take tents to shelter in??? Don't want to look a plonker!!! , but I've got one of them small flip up things I thought it might be handy for hiding from the rain!!
Anything else I should consider? I'm restricted to a 200mm f2.8, will that give enough reach? (plenty of cropping scope with my 5d Mk2)

Some people take the flip up tents, so you won't look out of place!

200mm might be a bit on the short side Cad East especially with full frame body, ideally you want 300mm + on a crop body.

Best of luck!

Ian, stick to Cad East mate. I'll try and dig some shots out from there and see what I shot at.
I wouldn't try West with your problems. I suffer from high blood pressure and West can have me gasping at times. No matter how hard you try to take it easy, you tend to find you push yourself more than you think.

Here you go Ian. Shot from Cad East with my 70-200mm and a converter on, so shot at 300mm on a D300.
This is uncropped to show you what to expect. You may be a tad short. But you'll still have a great time up there. I'm jealous. Wish I could join you.

Well, today was the day. Found the track for Cad East but couldn't get through a patch of mud on the track. Had to give up and parked up in the layby on the main road. Gave Cad West a go and finally made it to the top!! Sat up there for four hours and only saw two Hawks. I'll go again next time I'm around North Wales. Home to Lincolnshire tomorrow.

ONLY two Hawks in four hours isn't too bad Ian.
You can easily spend a day up there and see nothing. :D
Lets see the piccies then! You got to admit though, the wait is worth the buzz. ;)
Well done for getting up cad west mate. How did you find the walk/climb?

Kev.

Try the car park at RAF Valley, on Anglesey or drive to Maelog Lake at Rhosneigr.
Hawks are in and out of Valley all day, occassional SAR helicopters + others. Also th odd "strange" plane too.
You may even see HRH too.
There are regular plane "anoraks" there and no trouble form security, although if HRH is about it looks like a scene from Men In Black.

Ian,..... you really need to spend the whole day on the hill 9-5 or risk missing out on most of the action.

I Spent the day on Cad West yesterday, and the total for the day was 10 Hawk's, a Linx, 2 very low Dommi Passes, and a T2 going for it,..... first day this week that we had no frontline aircraft.

Yes there were long periods of no action, but that is the nature of the low fly game .
Hope you had a good day for your first trip,... and the weather was very kind to you,

Well, I did'nt really get much. The 2 Hawks were quite high, sky behind them. Came home today via Lake Vyrnwy and Pistell Rhaeder waterfall. Saw more action there with 4 F15's blatting around.
Got a couple of shots, but only had the 24-105 fitted so they're pretty small.
Living in South Lincs I've plenty of "local" stuff from Waddo, Cranwell, Conningsby, Cottesmore and Witterng, I really wanted some of those panned shots with the ground in view. I'll deffo be back, *** I'll try and get up Cad East next time.
The trek up West was'nt as bad as I thought it would be, the last bit along the fence was the worst!!
Thanks for all the hints guys, and keep up the good work posting these cracking shots.
