Well, what IS this film?

I've just opened a pack of exposed film from 1993, expecting it to be another 35mm colour negative film. What I've got is wildly different!

a) It's the same width as 35mm film
b) One side has no spocket holes, the other side has one large rectangular sprocket hole per frame
c) There is very little border on the side with no sprocket holes; the other side has a border that looks about 4mm (this is where the sprocket holes live). This border has a narrow frame in it reading "SAFETY FILM"
d) The shots are more closely spaced than a 35mm film; in fact it looks like square frames, except that each square frame has the shot exposed inside it as a rectangle.

I reckon I could scan it with my V500 (which has a 35mm negative holder without frame bars) but it would be a right pain with the Plustek... ok, just the one!



Also strange is that I can see the outline of the other side of the lake and the hill behind, in the gap between this and the next frame!

I'm guessing this was taken near the Fort William to Mallaig railway, with my wife's ancient camera, no idea what it was though.

Thanks Toni, that's very informative, and fits with my memory. I have some square format slides taken with a similar camera in 1974, and I think some told me they were 126. Mounted, it was possible to scan them with the slide frame holder in the Plustek.

I've recently been scanning some 126 Kodachrome slides for my inlaws and they're mounted as squares, very slightly bigger than a 35mm frame is tall.

Yes, that's what I remember; you can get almost all of the slide visible in my scanner. Clearly a different camera here. I'm wondering if it might have belonged to one of the kids.
