I just received a notice to prosecute for speeding in Manchester a little over a week ago, at around mid day.
I was was in Suffolk at that time, about 180 miles away.

I took a screen grab off their web site, and its the same type of car as mine although the registration is not readable.

So I wrote back and informed them that I was in Suffolk that day, at that time.
And included a scanned carbon copy work sheet, luckily dated and timed.

I also pointed out if they compared the image on their site, and the image of my car, that I enclosed,
If they looked closely they could see that it was an earlier model than mine, ( the rear light cluster is a different configuration)

And if they looked even closer and compared the two images they would discover that the offending car was Blue and mine certainly wasn't.!
(Backed up by the V5 & the recent MOT docs)

What p***ed me off even more was I wanted to replace a front number plate sometime ago, as some arse backed / drove into mine while it was parked
and I came out to find half of it laying on the floor!
To get a replacement I had to produce the MOT and V5 documents!
 
Maybe all High'n'Dry coupé owners have got the same notice?

Many years ago I got 3 tickets for not wearing a helmet at the same time - on 3 different bikes...
 
I got one years ago for a car that I'd scrapped.
You shouldn't have much trouble pointing out their error.
Pain in the proverbial though.

I suspect it's delibetately been made unreadable because it's on a website.

You have to login using the pin number they provide, on the notice, you can only see the car that the notice relates to.

Well I could believe that IF I lived in Manchester but as I live about 160 miles south, They may just have been p***ing in the wind.

The lovely London Borough of Lewisham sent my ex a parking fine for her old fiat punto

Car had never left Scotland and the car they said had the ticket was red, ours was silver - a quick call to explain this and a copy of the V5 sent off and we received a letter saying they were cancelling the ticket
 
I got one some years ago for a Volvo estate I sold 2 days previously and then the next day one from Chester C C for a demolished lamppost complete with photos of the lamppost cutting the car into a perfect V front to back ,it turns out after a few hilarious phone calls ,a vicar had bought it a few hours after I traded it in and it must have been a tad to powerful for him .DVLA had not yet even received the change of ownership documents . It took about a week to sort it out and that included a rather sarcastic phone call to a accident damage garage that was threatening me with all sorts of charges if I didn't remove the vehicle within 7 days .:runaway::runaway::runaway:

Interesting that one.
As the dealer had clearly not been in posession of the V5 document, and as they new full well the old one would not have reached the relevent place, they broke the law selling the vehicle on in that way.

Fairly sure the dealers retains the log book, you send the yellow section back to the DVLA. Dealer sells the car, gives new owner the green section and dealer then sends off the main part back to the DVLA

Of course.....dealers are different to private sales....Ta :-)
 
I find this all very strange.

In law, a person has to be proved guilty. You do not need to prove your innocence.

He needs to respond to the NIP.
It's annoying, but fact. The paper gives the opportunity to say you weren't driving / not your vehicle.
It's a notice of INTENDED prosecution. ..which gives an opportunity to clear it up prior to action being taken.
Thousands of NIPs are cancelled every day because people send their simple explanation without feeling the need to get arsey.

Yeah but being falsely accused tends to do that :D
All I need now is to get me a good lawyer, and sue for stress and the amount of time it took to get the evidence together to prove that I wasn't there ;)

The other thing that occurred to me, and maybe a little more serious, since the tax is now on line, no longer displayed,
and insurance checks are randomly done via the ANPR vans, the car in question may well not be insured in its own right,
and the leech is using my tax / insurance too.

I still wonder how he found a random matching number plate with the correct make and model albeit a different series.
Especially as I have never been anywhere Manchester in my car,
One could assume that the owner of the car is actually local to me and got caught out of area though.
 
Is yours a local reg no or a Manc one? It's possible that a similar car has an almost identical number - unlikely but possible. (When the XF was first released, we were passed by a convoy of 5 of them with very similar numbers.)

Never thought to check until now, but it was first registered in Reading.
 
It could be someone has cloned your car (reg) or it could be an admin error

Either way, hope you get it sorted out with minimal stress (Don't want you having Hissy Fits and dishing out perms-bans on here ;) (y) )

I see how I feel in a couple of days :D

I've just been raking round t'internet, and it seems that I should notify the local police, where to offence occurred,
and also DVLA who may or may not issue new plates.
I've done both now, and await their respective responses ;)

Cheers Adrian, I suppose that I could always buy a cheap set of age related plates from DVLA if neither come good :thumbs:
 
I've been cloned twice. One was my old Espace, cloned in London onto a ford escort!
The other is my Tvr, cloned onto a golf, it was red that's about the similarity. In my defence I pointed them at my website, online photos, handy with the date they were uploaded, showing it clearly wasn't a golf.
Number plates are easy to get, you must get show plates over the internet. No need for v5 etc.

The thing I found curious was it was the same make and model but a different series.
It may have been a fluke it may not.
I'm just glad the colour was miles out, or I may have had a real fight on my hands.
 
Most these days seem to be same make and model, usually colour also. It's so you avoid the speed cameras, or more likely the proliferation of NPR cameras. No tax, no mot, no insurance saves a fortune on your old car running costs. Get caught, do a runner, or just accept the fine and points. Most don't seem to care (or even have points). It's worth the risk.

That never occurred to me until last night, as everything is now computerised and linked to your Reg.
The more I think about it, more the inclined I am to get another set of plates from DVLA.
If they don't supply them.
 
False number plates are nothing new, years ago a ford I had stolen was recovered with plates from a mini registered in London, mind you that was
before they had the technology so I suppose now they have to make sure they match ?
Funniest thing like this I know of was a work colleague who was sent a ticket for speeding in Glasgow, why funny, well she would drive any further then a town 8 miles away
and never anywhere she hadn't been before, lived in Sussex. and yes the ticket was revoked.
I suppose that when they check the numbers all they see is the make of car so wouldn't realise immediately

I suspect you are right but it wouldn't hurt them to make absolutely sure would it?
Besides reporting the theft, via emailing the Mancs police, the DVLA I have also now notified my insurance company too.
Hopefully that's my arse covered should anything worse happen
