Had a couple of interesting DIY experiences this week.

First off was a Pentax 135mm with the beginnings of fungus on the second element. Got it for a tenner from LCE (always good guys in both the one here in Cheltenham and the one in Bristol) because of the damage. Ronsonol cleans fungus very well. Did a test shot on the digital camera, and it looks like I've now a lovely long portrait lens for the super a :)

Spurred on by this I decided to give a go to a 645 45mm lens I picked up on eBay. Seller sold it as fully working, but one of the elements had fungus, so got a partial refund on it. Grand total of £30 paid for it. I borrowed the lens spanner from work and got the ronsonol out again tonight! There are some small specs of damage to the AR coating from the fungus even after cleaning, but it all seemed to look good through the viewfinder, so I'll definitely be giving it a go over the weekend!

Of course, I'm not suggesting anyone else should pick up mild fungus cases for a song and fix them themselves - where would I get cheap lenses then :)

If that's only on the front element and you clean it off you might be surprised at how little it affects the image quality. Damage to coatings always looks crap because you are going from ~0.1% reflected light to the native glass at about 4%, so an increase in reflected light of 400 times! But in terms of the transmitted light it is only a 99.9% to 96% change, so all you'll lose is a bit of contast and a small amount of resolution. Unless there are craters in the glass itself, the focussing ability of the lens will hardly be changed.
 
Its all internal, besides, you gots the magic spanner, miracle juice and hexperience..:D

Shooting this lens was an entirely woolly experience, although lenses can take some major trauma especially towards the front, before they start to become less than useful.

I don't even have this lens any more, I just like posting pictures of it for the interest/educational value.
Its beautiful yet completely useless....:lol:
