After lots of research and help from you folks  I've ordered myself a 60d with a 17-85 is usm lens :) can't wait till saturday  I'm like a kid in a sweet shop

Thank you for putting up with my endless questions throughout my selection process  (no doubt I'll be back with more after Sat)!!! lol

Enjoy your new camera Steve. I know exactly what your going through, I was the same when I was waiting to pick up my Nikon D300s, I dont think I got much sleep the night before.

The only way to learn is to ask questions and never be afraid to ask even if it seems a silly question to you, you'll realise afterwards that it wasn't.

Anyway will wait now for your first photo post.

Enjoy the 60D, sure you will love it.

Not sure I'd have went for the 17-85mm lens, seems to get mixed reviews.

im sure you will love it just as much as i do now ive only had it 2 weeks lol so much easier to use

It was worth selling 2 iphones and a PSP go to get it

I would have gone for a better lens but you'll still get some good shots out of it.

had mine for a couple of weeks now but only had a lens for a week
loving it so far and just added a ggs screen cover and updated the fimware to the latest version

Thanks folks, I'm sure I'll love it!!!

I'm pretty sure that all 'kit' lenses have mixed reviews somewhere along the line but as funds are not bottomless decisions have to be made. I too perhaps would have chosen a different lens if money wasn't an object.

There's time for 'better' lenses........enough spent for one day!

The 17-85 is surely capable of taking decent shots.....is it not? What would you suggest as an alternative?

Nice purchase mate, but you now just opened the flood gates :D

That lens will be fine to start with , master that then move on to better .

Enjoy

i would have gone for a 17-85 as well but a 15-85 came up at a good price so i went for that just saving for a 70-200 f4 to compliment it now

lol greetings from another new 60d owner (had mine for about a week or so!)

I got mine with a 'nifty fifty' but now also have the canon 15-85mm and the Sigma 100-300mm

I'm on a real learning curve with this from my old Oly E-510 and strangely I'm finding it easier to shoot in manual than anything else! (always had my Oly in AV mode!)

Maybe I should actually sit down and read the manual!! Though I find getting out and taking pictures is just as good a way to learn.......just need to know what the camera can actually do!!

Have fun!!

Neil

Congratulations on the camera. But now prepare to start spending ... it's an addiction.

You first go on denial: "No, I won't buy more than 2 lenses...". 3 months later you have wide, tele, macro, extension tubes, filters, flash, tripod, etc. :)

Nice one, no need to spend a fortune on lenses to start with - plenty of time to do that later!

I think the 17-85 is a cracking lens :) suits the 60d (well x0D) really well imo. let us know how you get on with it :D Paul

Bit of a difficult choice with the kits available on the 60D and keeping the funds in check.

You have either the 18-55, 17-85, 18-135 or the excellent 17-55 f2.8.

The 17-55mm would cost about £500 more though.

18-55mm is of course the cheapest option.

Then it's between the 17-85 or the 18-135 and I guess it comes down to range or USM as they are both very similar prices.

Like others have said though, you will soon have to decide what lens to get next even you don't think so at the moment. :D

50mm is a must have, bargain lens.

15-85 usually comes with the 7D

I have to jump In as I also have the 60d aswell as the 17-85mm and I found it a fantastic "everyday" combo where you don't want the worry of mega expensive glass on your body! Ofcourse I have to say that following advice on here I now have the 15-85mm too :-)

Keep hearing good things about the 60D and sounds like a fine camera so hope you enjoy it, sure you will

Always thought I would be content with my 40D, but very impressed with the picture quality from my daughters 550D and getting very tempted by the 60D. All them pixels to crop with and really like the auto iso feature where you can set a maximum

I didn't think they sold the 15-85mm as a UK kit lens?

Yeah, sorry, I missed the "kit" word in your original post and thought you were just talking about general walkabout lenses for crop bodies.

The 17-85mm has received some bad press in the past, but it's quite a decent lens and not terribly expensive. It's slow, the build quality isn't very good and it distorts badly at the wide end (you can fix this in PP), but it has a very useful range and gives good results, providing you get a sharp one.

Canon's f2.8 17-55mm is a big step up and offers excellent IQ, but it's expensive, and not very well built for the price. Sigma and Tamron both have alternatives, and the Tamron seems to get a lot of praise. I haven't used either of them, so I can't speak from experience.

Where do you find it lacking? seems a fairly solid old lump to me and not had any build issues or perhaps i've just been lucky.
Obviously not weather sealed, but bought it knowing that and it does allow some dust in, but not the only lens to do that by any means and doesn't affect picture quality

Hmmmm, I'm a bit alarmed at the responce to the 17-85 lens

Would I have been better going for this alternative as a starter? EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

I've used two of them - not old or abused - and just found them a bit too "plastic". The zoom and focus rings weren't as firm/smooth as I would have expected either. Sort of L optics, in a consumer build?

The IQ is first class though, and I may still get one, but I think Canon could do better at this price point. I know it's not an L, but compare it with the 17-40mm L, which has far better build quality and is cheaper.

17-85 is fine; not a pro lens by any stretch but unless you the eyes of a hawk and like to peek pixels, it's fine as an everyday lens. Okay not fast wide open at 85mm but the 60D has good ISO range so that can help in low light.

Was going to get that lens with the 60D as a works kit for one of our journos but WEX did a package of 60D + Tamron 17-50mm for about the sane money, which just represented a better deal at the time.

Just enjoy your new buy :)

Fair enough comments, never handled the 17-40mm so can't really compare, but can see you wanting at least equal quality given the price
Perhaps the zoom and focus rings loosen up with time, mine seem smooth enough and at least equal to other similar size lenses I have owned

One thing I don't like is the lack of an included hood, that really is a bit cheeky and would expect one really for the high purchase cost

You're not the only one who thinks this! It's a bone of contention with Canon, because they only include the hood with L glass. Price doesn't come into it. Seems short sighted to me. It irritates people, some of the OEM hoods are very expensive, and I'm sure a lot of us just look for a third party alternative.

Hi mate, dont be alarmed!

I have had a 17-85 for years. I normally use the 24-105 but every time i use the 17-85 i am astonished with the pictures i get for the little price it was. The IS is awesome and my copy at least produces fantastic colours. The images sharpen a treat with a little post processing :) Great value starter lens imo!

I think the 17-85 is a nice starter lens, got a good range while you work out what you want to do.

That was the question I asked myself too before deciding.

There didn't seem to be much between the 17-85 & the 18-135 and I went for the 135mm in the end to have the extra range on a walk about lens.

I guess someone is sitting patiently looking out the window for a courior van. :D

Isnt there some kind of a postal strike today?

Which included some kind of embargo on couriors???

;)

Enjoy your new cam when it arrives,i was the same waiting on my d7000

The 15-55 is probably the best EF-S lens available from Canon and in my opinion Tamron or Sigma don't have anything in the same class for IQ, or build quality. The two lenses that are on my 7D for a large majority of the time are this and my 70-200 f2.8. Personally I don't think you can get a better lens in that range for the money. It gives a very similar FoV to a 24-70 on FF and I'm sure it was designed to provide crop body users an equivalent of the 24-70 f2.8 but without the "L" or the price tag.

To the OP, enjoy your set up and get out there and take some pictures. That's when the real learning begins !!
