Well I just can't like the Om2

...and of course Canon weren't going to let Olympus get away with the laurels and bought out the 300TL

[2] A-TTL Mode
This mode is advantageous for general flash photography. Operation is fully automatic, under conditions ranging from total darkness to fill-in flash.
The shutter speed and the aperture are set automatically with the aid of near-infrared rays, etc., and the flash output is controlled by directly measuring the light coming through the lens and being reflected from the film surface. In cases such as fill-in flash, this A (Advanced)-TTL mode balances the exposure between the main subject and the background to prevent unnatural effects.
The light is measured through the lens so exposure is automatically compensated even in bounce flash photography and multiple flash photography.

[3] FEL (Flash Exposure Lock) Mode
With the world's first spot metering for flash photography, using the principle of spot metering, this mode gives correct exposure even when the main subject is not in the center of the viewfinder.
Before an exposure is made, the pre-flash is made by a 1/20th power. The light reflected from the main subject is spot-metered by the camera and the exposure level is stored into memory (effective for 30 seconds). When the actual exposure is made, the flash output is determined by this value. TTL flash photography is possible without being affected by the reflectivity of the film in use since the TTL control system of this mode does not use the reflection from the film surface.
It is also possible to independently control the exposure level for the main subject with the flash and the exposure level for the background with the ambient light, if the H/S control of the T90 is used with the FE lock mode.

You could do what I do and not be tied down by expensive rarer lenses from Olympus, Nikon etc ...if I want to use a 40mm prime lens (which I prefer compared to 50mm) then I use my Konica Autoreflex TC with 40mm f1.8 pancake lens...I'm not saying the Hexanon lens is as good as the Zuiko in scientific tests but you'd be hard pressed to see the difference.
I got my set of Hexanon lenses for peanuts years ago inc two 40mms, but still see the above mentioned camera and lens combo going under £20 if you are patient...I also have the more modern electronic Konica FS-1 but unless you know the seller quite a few have electrical problems.

I saw one on the Bay of E for £450...

Is it really that good?

A bit late to this thread. Cameras can of course sometimes be love them or hate them. In my miss spent youth I traveled about in eastern and western Europe armed with an OM-1, OM-2 and OM-3 with 5 lenses and a T20 flash. The kit was light, the lenses excellent and the cameras never missed a beat. The small size and reliability of Olympus OM SLRs made them IMHO fantastic travel cameras. My T20 flash although low powered worked very well with the OM-2. Yes there was better flash kit, but the best camera by far is the one that you always use, what ever make or model!

...but have you tried a range of other makes to compare.....I used the Pentax S3 for about 35 years and wasn't interested in other makes as it did the job, then I upgraded to MF and it's only really in the last 5 years (back to 35mm) that I have realised how many excellent 35mm cameras there were\are around and use em....but I don't love any of them and just like some more than others.

Brian I have. I agree with you there are some really great 35mm bodies. That said I have reduced my 35mm kit down to just 71 bodies. I don't have any Konica, Alpa or Leica, but I have examples of most other systems. The only system I really don't like is Canon EOS, not because of the cameras but because I have had several EOS lenses fail on me. My main point about the OM-2, as with any camera, is one persons 'dog' is another's ideal shooter.

Probably not, but it is rare - and rare means $$$

The 50mm f1.4 is a far better bang for buck.

Got one, my second in fact, when stopped down a notch and beyond it's excellent, At f1.8 it's low contrast, flarey and a bit soft (but all fun!):

Well I'm a fan of Konica\Hexanon lenses even the cheaper later lenses (maybe not Hexar) are very good...but the earlier ones are the best and Konica must have been financially squeezed as the lenses and cameras went downhill.

Quite a collection - is it an eclectic mix, or a complete collection of specific brands/systems?
A large proportion are Nikon MF/Nikkormat/NikonAF, but a fair mix of Olympus, Pentax, Minolta, Yashica, Rollei, Fujica, Chinon, Zenit, Voigtlander and Canon. Mad really, but I don't care!

.......but anyone who uses only Nikon or Olympus etc lenses will never know the lovely results that can be obtained by other lenses...while the digi guys are sorting through the lenses that would work at best with their £2000 cameras, us filmies can try combos of film and lenses very cheaply.

I find I am ok with flash's I particularly like my olymus trip35 and a flash always gives great results.
