I looked at FB and Bebo etc but I valued my spare time as being too precious.

This is the bit I find odd, people seem to see it as an all or nothing thing. It is like when people say can you disable my account as I am leaving the forum.
As you said, use it wisely. It is what you make of it. I scan Facebook 3 or 4 times a day, Like things I like, comment where I want to and move on. Looking through my wall, I share 1 thing a week or so.
Some people live on it, as some people do on here. They are addicted. They are lonely/insecure.
Facebook is like going to the pub. Some do, some don't. Some live in a pub and know everyone, some only pop in when meeting someone.
Why can't people leave their Facebook account there? A way for someone to get in contact with them?
As for Twitter - that is pure verbal diarrhea and I can't believe how much time is wasted with it. I'd love to know what percentage of Tweets aren't read by anyone. If you could similarise all the tweets from a day, how many unique things were said. It is when you see a big event and you have x number of supposed journalists tweeting the same thing as everyone else to be retweeted again and again. Then 2 hours later written on their website, with a read the full story here tweet which is also retweeted.
I love gadgets and PCs, but when I get home I am with my children till they go to bed, then I spend time with my wife and then out comes the iPad to see what has been happening. Real life first, tech life second.
