well I did it...

Never done Facebook.....or t***ter....but good for you!

I've got it, primarily to keep in contact with people I like but not quite enough to give them my email address

I enjoy Facebook, it's useful to me and allows me to keep up with things :)

I'll confess to sharing all your nightschool posts, got a few friends who are mad about that sort of photography... keep trying to convince them to get their thumbs out of their backsides and do summat about it

Much appreciated  I'm glad your liking the post I'm putting out :D

It all depends on the circumstances surrounding your family and life. All to easy to moan about facebook, but if you installed it don't go moaning about it is my motto :D My close family is spread across the uk, some near and some much further away. It is great for seeing how they are all doing in life and being kept updated instantly. I have a son who I go fishing with, we can chat together whilst trying to arrange something, I can screen grab shots of things instantly and send it to him explaining this that and the other. Life has never been so easy regarding communicating with people imho.

have been off FB for 2 weeks now, it was getting too much 'here is a pic of my drink' and 'look at what I am just about to eat' so I decided to de activate.

nothing against the site, it has many uses, 80% of this years wedding jobs were through FB but as a personal thing it was getting too much for me and the people that matter to me are all close by and can be contacted by phone.

i have friends and family all over the world and find FB is great for keeping in touch with these people.

After far too long of bumming around on facebook, I've closed my account.

Does anyone else find that they log on, just for the sake of logging on? I did :(

I got an account to follow a local controversy that was going on. Since closed it. BTW it takes a while (think it is 3 weeks) before your account is kaput. If you log on before that the closure will be cancelled.

Facebook is as good or as crap as you want to make it.

I send and receive more messages via FB than I do via e-mail now.

It's also good for keeping in touch with people, particularly in my case, with friends from school who I haven't seen for many years.

It's good for a bit of light hearted banter too.

It's also easy to customise it so you don't keep getting the stupid game stuff like someone asking you to help build an imaginary barn on their imaginary farm to house their imaginary cattle.

Steve.

this is my reason for staying on facebook. Have family in Kenya, Abu dhabi and Australia.

I only joined Facebook a couple of months back because where I work closed last week. Personally I've been there almost 34 years so have made lots of friends etc., some people have left, whilst those of us staying with the company have mostly moved to different departments split over two locations so it is a means for us to keep in touch.
Aside from that I use it to follow a few sites, which is easier than having to keep checking in on their websites.

I did find an old girlfriend on Facebook, it was an amicable separation about 26 years ago, I sent her a message just to say hello, and she cancelled her Facebook account within days.

It's the people that live their life like an open wound on there I find fascinating. Attention seeking posts like 'I'm so angry!' then someone asks why and they say 'oh nothing'. I don't have an account, but I update the girlfriend's pictures and some of the people's posts on her wall could be the ramblings of someone who was certifiable.

Facebook has so many uses, I don't see how you can't use it these days. Keeping in contact with family and friends, sharing family photos, keeping up to date with companies/products as a lot now share info through facebook and communicate.

Perhaps you were only using it for friends and they share spam. You can hide the spam or if they are a constant annoyance, unfriend them.

 I hate people that put everything they do, all those games feeds & the damn likes :bang: so they just get blocked or don't appear on my news feeds

Has its benefits and fallbacks.....

We have friends and family worldwide so it's a quick and easy way to keep them updated with the kids progress with pics etc.....

Also several colleagues at work, to share some in jokes with.....

What does annoy me about it the....

1) Share if you want to help beat Cancer / TB / AIDS / BSE etc type of threads
2) Kid holding a placard with "Daddy says if I get 1,000,000 likes he'll buy me a pony / dog / elephant etc....
3) Please vote for a friend of a friend of a friend in some competition
4) Sponsored pages
5) "Fred" thinks you may like......
6) Virtual farms and virtual cows and requests to help

You can block all those virtual farms/cows in the your settings

+1 We have relatives and friends all over the world - I find it a great tool together with Skype for keeping in touch with people, seeing photos of the family growing up. There is a lot of rubbish on there of course, but relatively easily avoided.

As with everything, if the negatives outweigh the positives it's probably not worth it so for you no doubt the right choice :), I do never understand people who have pride in never used it, it's odd :)

Can all be blocked/unfriended/hide ..... stories

I suppose it's because of how a lot of people use it and it can give it a negative impression. If people didn't post so much spam, I daresay a lot more people would use it.
Plus some people are adverse to putting too much information on the net. As I wrote in my earlier post, I managed to find an old girlfriend. She obviously doesn't want to be found as she deleted her account within days of me saying hello. It's frightening what information you may have on the internet.

Yes, very scary how much you can find out about someone online!

I don't understand people who knock it but have never used it. It's a great tool - but a tool is all it should be. For me personally, my fun has come to an end there....for now anyway.

I have to have a facebook profile for work (I admin our facebook page for our area) but the profile is only for that and is devoid of personal info

Mind you I can understand how people can get addicted to talking to people on line :whistling:

(as a slight digression what I like is when people put their facebook profiles on their CVs but then post really inappropriate remarks forgetting that the potential employer will see them . We had one application for a seasonal ranger two years ago where the night before the interview a guy wrote

"going for that job with ****** tomorrow, they've some phat places for raves and I'll have all the keys FTW "

Strangely he wasn't appointed  )

I like Facebook for the simple reason that I'm pretty much of an introvert, and so it allows me to have some sort of social interaction with people, but without the actual need to see them, and also with me in control. Suits me down to the ground.

its as fun/annoying/addictive as you want to make it at the end of the day..

its your choice whether you block annoying content or spend far too many hours of the day on there.

its a good tool for keeping in contact with people you wouldn't see for some time, but as for using it to see what someone you'll see tomorrow has been up to.. that's a bit sad.

Peter, let's not forget the restraining order..... :exit:

:bat: I'll have you know that restraint is one of my best things. I can resist anything......................................except temptation

Pete...your court defense didn't work then....hence the ankle bracelet.

Pete...your court defense didn't work then....hence the ankle bracelet.

I cut that off the first week, I stuck the tracker on the back of a Polish lorry at South Mimms services..... Crap , did I say that out loud :exit:

I can never understand what Facebook or Twitter is all about (maybe its my age) don't think anyone would be interested to hear what I have or have not been doing on a day to day basis.

I haven't logged onto Facebook since March. It's so liberating.

Although it is great for keeping in touch with people you don't get to see often, and in the early days it was pretty fun, it got to the point where my news feed was full of junk ads and banality - all my interesting friends sort of gave up on it and most of the posts seemed to be made by the stay at home mums who had the time to just share all the those tiresome motivation chain things and what they are having for tea.

There were also a few people that felt the need to share every little thought that popped into their head and post hundreds of photos every time they went out. Rather than simply enjoying the experience, they must have been taking hundreds of photos constantly to upload on the site when they got home.

I set up my wife's phone the other day for her, I reinstalled the Facebook app as part of this process and I happened to open the app to test it... The first status I saw was something along the lines of "I'm so tired"... That pretty much sums up the reason I gave up on the site... People just sharing so much unnecessary detail about their lives.

So yeah, I'd rather catch up with my buddies over a cold beer than in a noisy stream of junk and adverts.

Great site for expats, stay in touch with everything that's going on across the world!

Easy enough to filter out dull people/stuff, and really great for organising social events.

I barely use it. Realised I was spending far too much time doing exactly nothing of consequence on there. Now I use it as a chat client for a couple of people who don't use other 'old school' clients.

And as a lazy way to half-heartedly keep in touch with people I don't see that often. (eg mates back home since I moved to Australia). Email and Skype, etc do a better job on the whole though.

I think some people have a fairly serious problem with the likes of Facebook. The need for recognition of everything in their lives, it's as if they don't know how to experience moments in their lives for themselves. They have to share it online to make it real. People posting real time updates from hospital as they stand by a family member taking their last breath, etc. quite disturbing.

Facebook has so many uses, I don't see how you can't use it these days. Keeping in contact with family and friends, sharing family photos, keeping up to date with companies/products as a lot now share info through facebook and communicate.

Pretty sad state of affairs if you can't imagine life without Facebook. :| (As I said, I do use it to a degree myself).

People had family and friends before Facebook, now there are mobile phones, free VOIP and video streaming services, email... definitely no need for Facebook to keep in touch easily.

Sharing family photos, yea FB makes it easy, but there are of course dozens of other ways to do it, most give you more definite control over where they get stored too. (My parents have a server at home in the UK, easy for anyone to log in from anywhere in the world, and Zuckerberg doesn't get to keep your photos).

Keeping up with companies - I get enough spam through other channels without volunteering for it on FB. :p

what I like is when people put their facebook profiles on their CVs

People put their Facebook profiles on their CVs?! What do they hope to gain from that?

i'd guess (as its not something i'd do myself) that they are trying to appear rounded characters with a wide range of interests who'll be fun to have in the office. (and cynically if they are good looking its socially acceptable way of showing that off)

which is fine , until the prospective employer finds 35 pictures of them out of their tiny minds snogging strangers and flashing their knickers in the street

Not really sure what it is or does, but when I read of the trouble it causes some do wonder why those affected don't just turn it off or unregister

Can see addiction problems becoming an issue for those people who seem to be looking at their phone and presumably these sites to the exclusion of pretty much all else
