Weird problem

Hi guys

Just developed a roll of HP5 in my usual way (rondinax tank, rodinal) and many of the negs have this strange looking mark in the shadows.

I must admit I rushed a little and didn't rinse the film very well and I found a weird sticky spot on the film which may have been introduced when I dropped the film (i know, I know)

Has anyone seen anything like this before? just curious to know what exactly may have caused it.

Cheers

lol......you're gonna have to draw a ring round it, there are alsorts of artefacts introduced to scans, which one in particular :)

That looks like insufficient fix, it might not look like that on the neg but its the way the scanner reproduces it.

You could try re-fixing with fixer you know for certain is good, mebbe leave it in there a bit longer.

Thanks. I fixed for 6 mins and I could see the strange marks on the film before I started the rinse stage.

My fixer is good, quite fresh - I'm wondering if I have under developed the roll as the massivedev says 6:00 for 1:25 Rodinal and on my bottle of developer it says 8 mins!!

I normally use Tri-x and never had a problem with it, that takes 7 mins...

Here's a picture of the film itself - I only shot half the roll and this is what was left on what should have been blank film! Hopefully you can see what looks like a faint orangey-brown ghosting across the film?

Extra development time will give a small increase in density but a larger gain in contrast.

The normal descriptive adjective used to describe under fixed film is "milky". Does the film look to be a half way house between fully clear and the appearance of unprocessed film?

Is there any possibility that it wasn't loaded correcting in the tank and what you're seeing is the effect of uneven processing?

I've just shot a roll of Tri-X and developed that - indeed it came out 'milky' so I think it must be my fixer. I'll make some more up tomorrow.

yeah, I'm still going with fixer, not sure about orangey brown ghosting but it does look like fix failure.

ps...I like your timer :)

I would just try a clip test on the leader of the roll. This is one I did by dunking the end of a roll of HP5 in fixer for three or four minutes only. The film did not get developed first.

You can see quite clearly through it. I reckon that your fixer is probably exhausted.

Thanks guys, yeah I've just made some fresh fixer, re-shot the frosty leaf pics this morning and the roll is soaking now. The negs look fine.

I realised the 200ml of fixer that goes into my tank has developed 8 rolls at least, so fairly good going!!

Thanks, it's actually for my teaching - the labels say 'stop talking' and it makes a nice chunky and loud 'tic' - it's saved me a lot of shouting and waiting over the years!!
