Just got a Yongnuo 565 and today noticed it has this weird marks on the screen

I thought it was maybe a fault (and it might be)

BUT..... the weird thing is it disappears and appears when I move around the house so it there sometimes and others the screen is totally normal like its interference from something :cautious:

Anyone seen this before ??

Photo is hard to make out but sometimes its worse than this sometimes the screen is totally clear depending where I move in the house

Not sure if this is related or not, but I remember I was out with my camera one day, and I was wearing sunglasses. When I looked at the LCD screen on the camera, it looked like there were massive brown marks all over it, but not there when I took the glasses off... Do you wear glasses with reactor light lenses or have any filters on your camera?

Long shot, stab in the dark, probably a load of old tosh :D

No no glasses and I removed batteries to re-charge (just in case) and it still appears even with no power

It kind of swirls around when I move around

It might just be down to the plastic used in the screen, cheap and cheerful.

Was also going to say looks like polarised light... normally see it with CIR-PL's or polarised sunglasses lookign at stuff.
I think for some plastics, it just shows it's not fitted flat and is slightly twisted/compressed in the fitting.

Right so do you think its a fault worth sending it back for ??

Here is a naff video taken on my phone (hard to see but you might get the idea)

I can see it on mine too when leaning back i think it may be a pressure thing.

Ahh interesting so if its just a characteristic of the flash then I don't mind as its still a good flash and it wont affect the use of it.

Just worried it was a fault....

LCD displays use polarised light.

Some plastics have photo elastic properties such that polarised light passing through create interference patterns or banding around areas of stress. In the days before computer aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis, This property was used by engineers for mechanical stress analysis using a polariscope.

The same patterns appear when you look through toughened (pre-stressed) glass whilst wearing polarised sunglasses.

In this case I'd say it's either a poor quality plastic moulding used for the display window which means the plastic was pre-stressed when it was made or the window is under stress from when it was 'snapped' into the flash body. Could be both.

The polarised light is that reflected from the LCD screen underneath the window.

A very comprehensive explanation - thank you.

After hearing others have had the same issue I feel more confident its just a quirk of an otherwise excellent flash so I wont be sending it back

i believe that is liquid in the lcd panel, this unit is defo faulty and you should return it and get a replacement!!!

But a another lad on here has the same flash and his screen is the same. I know both could be faulty but not very likely. Plus if it was the liquid would it not be there all the time. This disapears when away from daylight

Hi John, I bought the yongnuo 560 mk 3 last week and just had a look, mine has the same patterns never noticed untill I had a look .
If you gently press the clear screen the pattens change so it's my belief that it's stress from the flash housing pressing on the lcd screen and probably will be ok.
Andy.

Thank you so that is another confirmation - great then they must all be the same I cannot see three all being faulty. Does your pattern vanish in artificial light ?

Yes all patterns are gone under artificial light and that's probably why I had not noticed it before, I have only used the flash at night and thought I would check my flash to help you decide if there was a fault or not, anomallys like this can be worrying when you don't have another unit to compare with but it looks like just a strange quirk and at the price of the flash it's something I can put up with.

Thanks yeah, if its just the way these flashes are then that is fine by me.

I suppose most times you wont be using it in daylight anyway ;)

I would bet that it's not pressing on the LCD screen at all. Pressing on the window changes the stresses in the window, which is why the fringe patterns change. As mentioned above it's called photo elasticity..
