Weird EF-RF Problem

Hi all

I recently moved over to mirrorless, but I only occasionally need a wide angle lens so decided to buy 50/1.2 RF, 28-70/2 RF and then use my old 16-35 f4 L IS with an EF-RF adapter.

I used the gear for a wedding this weekend and was delighted overall, but they asked for a very large group shot where I used the 16-35. Both edges were soft when my usual experience of this lens is that it is decent edge-edge!

I was using a cheap Andoer adapter off eBay and I'm hoping that is the issue. I have a proper Canon one on order now, but I wondered if anyone else has seen this happening?

From memory 16-35mm f4 is very decent at wide end but becomes very poor at 35mm.

That's a good shout - I guess a tiny tolerance problem could cause big issues. I'd only use the 16-35 if I needed more than 28mm - I think I was at about 23mm but I compared shots taken at the weekend with older shots at the same focal length and aperture on the 5DIV and they were much sharper at the edges. I think what threw me was the sharp centre with blurry edges - perhaps if it is fraction out then the middle stayed within the dof but the periphery did not.
 
I don’t use the 16-35 f4 ef much, haven’t noticed any problems with can ef to RF adapter when I have used it.
 
I have neither the 16-35 or the Andoer adaptor.

But with the Canon adapter I’ve never had an issue.

I’ll add I previously had a 3rd party adapter on the M series and had no issues there
 
Just a thought, try it both image stabilisers off and then with one (lens only) then body only then with both on and compare images.

That's a really good idea - I now remember years ago having soft images with HSS flash with IS on whilst on a tripod!
 
The actual Canon converter turned up earlier than expected and I just tried it out - it appears to perfect and that is with IS on - I'll do some more comprehensive tests later!
 
Tried a large group shot at a wedding today - lens IS off and using Canon's EF-RF adapter - looks perfect!
