Recently I’ve noticed that the sound indicator on my MacBook is acting up. It sometimes goes all the way up, sometimes all the way down all this while adjusting the volume along the way and without me doing anything on my machine. It's doing this on its' own :cuckoo::thinking:

I don’t know what I may have done, or installed that would cause this; does anyone have any clue about this? Where can I check for this problem and get it solved?

Thanks

I've not seen that before on mine. Have you got any external sound devices connected? Or could it be something behind the keys on the keyboard?

I'd solve it by buying a PC instead!! ;) :p :D

amusingly enough, with vista and creative sound card i couldnt even get any sound.

then of couse my printer, plug into mac - works. Plug into vista, no driver support, printer wont work i make that mac 2 vista 0, and before im accused of rabid mac fanboism, ive got vista on my laptop and work pc cos i really like it

Could it be the keyboard shortcuts? Have you got mayo in them? :D

But those are not Vista faults.

Creative and printer manufacturer to blame.

still a pc thats having the problem. Oddly i have an older printer that works no problem on vista, from the same manufactuer, so why does that work, but not the other?

Sounds like a driver problem to me. Possibly the newer drivers didn't make to the Vista installation CD and aren't loaded .

Have you tried either the Vista web site or the card/printer manufacturers site for the latest drivers.

Good one, but then I'd have a whole lot of other problems that I, and the rest of the world, wouldn't be able to solve before the end of time! :p:p:p

Nop, nothing connected to my machine .... I am begining to suspect a gremlin under the keyboard :thinking:

I agree, it's not Vista's fault .. it's the users' fault for using Vista !!! :p:D:p:D

I've also found out that when the sound goes up a red light is emmitted from the earphone jack!! Now this is really freaking me out.

Is the same red light emitted when you use the keyboard shortcuts (top right) to change the volume, I can't look at mine now as I'm at work.

The red light will be because it is a digital and anlogue jack...

Sorry, but I don't know what short-cuts you're talking about? The only way I use to change the volume is by using the volume icon on the screen and drag that up or down; or by using the "fn" key along with F3 (mute), F4 (lower volume), and F5 (increase volume).

Either way, I've never noticed red light being emmitted from the earphone jack; and at closer inspection even when the computer is doing this volume adjustment on its' own (which isn't always ... it happens at odd times and intervals) it sometimes emmits this red light!

Right now, and since I've logged on this morning, I've not had this issue as yet.

I was meaning the "fn" and F keys although on my Mackbook they are F10 - F12...

Can you take the keyboard off on yours? It might be worth getting a can of compressed air and giving it a clean. I will check the red light on mine later, but am pretty sure it is normal...

Thanks for the input.

I have no idea how to take off the keyboard as I am relatively new to Macs. I am not too worried about the red light, as it wouldn't be possible for red light to come out of the socket unless the light iteself was built into that part of the laptop!

What I am annoyed at is the volume icon sliding up and down on its' own accord.

take the keyboard out and check the usb plug is clean, then check that the keyboard is set right in the control panel

i got my non-working bits working on vista by using driver compatibility mode. Something that ive never had to do on the mac. Somethings just...work....

....

matty,

Thank you for the feedback, but how exactly do I remove the keyboard? As for the USB plug, I am sure it is clean, but what has this got to do with this issue ?

Have you looked on the apple site for how to clean/remove the keyboard?

Are you anywhere near an apple store? You can book an appointment with them and they usually know their stuff...

Frankly, no! I didn't give Apple site a look! As for the Apple Store option, the nearest would be Cardiff ... I may just do that! Again, didn't think of that option .... sometimes the simplest solutions are always overlooked!
