Weight loss ideas

I dont consider the diet I embarked upon as BS, thats if you were referring to my post that is. For me, BS diets are YO YO diets that make people fat thin fat thin, they use every diet plan available to man, lose the weight by shocking their systems then re gain it and so on and so forth. The diet I did involved taking out meat and dairy, I ate buckets of vegetables, fruit, pulses, soya, drank plenty of water eliminated caffeine as Ii cant drink coffee without milk, the only sugar I took was whatcame in a piece of fruit naturally. I lost the weight I needed to, and also learned a few things along the way about healthy eating.

Hello Emma

No my mini rant was not directed at your post and reading back now I can understand why you thought it was - sorry about that.

I actually applaude what you say and did.

My main gripe with this whole thing is that people grasp at straws just to lose some weight and lose sight of the big picture... LONG TERM HEALTH.

Here I go again:bonk::bonk::bonk:

No offence meant, hope you understand.

The thing that absolutely gets me going is the situation we are experiencing with local very good friends who have recently experienced severe dietary (in the long term sense) complications - potentially life-threatening.

They refuse to take any advice and they are headed for serious trouble on an ugly collision course.

O.K. Rant over and here's me trying to get on topic again:bonk::thumbs:

I have actually Slapo, I have decided after doing this diet that I wont be eating meat again, Ive not had coffee for a fortnight and dont miss it, so have eradicated caffeine from my diet, and instead got into the habit of drinking lots of water, I enjoyed this diet, apart from the expense, maybe I should learn to shop a little more frugally. Dont knock things until they are tried, especially when it can be part of a healthy eating plan ,it was just a 'tip' that I wanted to share, didnt realise it would cause a problem.

This is excellent what you are doing. Coffee and tea is POISON!

If you start thinking about and researching what we put into our bodies daily it is no wonder that our health is going for a ....:nono: I should not be saying that on here...:D

Please note that I am not saying one should live like a survivor on an island.

By all means treat yourself to a snack occasionally but do it wisely.

You do not have to cut meat out of your diet. When you do eat meat stick with a portion no larger than a deck of cards.

I know you all are thinking I'm absolutely nuts on this one and many of my friends locally think so too because S.A. is the land of sunny skies, boerewors, beer and braai.

Consider the health of their parents who have been doing this for years and you have to come to different insights.

Or die young of some form of heart disease.

Can I just ask something here?

If for arguements sake.. you took a set of identical twins who had identical metabolism too. They took the same amount of exercise as each other.

Twin no.1 weighs 10 stone,,,,,,,,twin no.2 weighs 14 stone because twin 2 eats a lot more and wrong stuff compared to twin No.1

Now... if twin 2 started eating exactly what twin 1 eats... she would get down to the same weight... because that amount and type of food is what is keeping a 10 stone woman at a level.

Is this not so?

Possibly not Janice.

If twin 1 is eating enough to maintain their weight then twin 2 may need to eat less in order to burn off the excess calories stored as fat.

If one was to stick to the WW plan after finishing weight loss you add an additional 6 points onto your allowance to maintain weight rather than to lose weight.

Twin 1 is more than likely taking in 2500 calories or at least enough calories so that they are burning what they take in.

I think thats right.

If everything else (including metabolism as stated) remains equal and constant yes.

Here is some scary info to munch on - pun intended:D

Almost 80% of overweight adults have high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated blood-cholesterol levels, coronary artery disease or osteoarthritis.

Nearly 40% have more than one of these conditions.

This has staggering financial complications to all forms of health services and us the patients.

One of the keys to preventing and changing this is to control your blood sugar levels constantly.

You want to change the roller coaster effect of your glycemic index.

More to follow for those who are interested:thumbs:

So since you started eating healthy what has been your favourite meal?

I think mine would have to be two meals, one of which was morrisons chicken breast with bacon and BBQ sauce with veg and potatoes.
The other was a haddock fillet poached in milk with mash and peas.

I'd suggest leaving out the bacon. It's usually just excess fat.

How do you control your blood sugar levels constantly?
I didn't think that was possible for a working person...

Simple

A bit of planning and irritation for the first 2-3 weeks and then you settle into what must become a lifestyle...

You can actually eat most of what you like if you cook/prepare it sensibly.

We have a little credit card size booklet called "Enjoy and Avoid". It is so small it fits into a wallet and it works a treat for the first few weeks of shopping until you settle into what is on and what not.

I will share it bit by bit in the next few days - PM me if anyone wants more info sooner.

The next bit of news is that you should understand your body's glycemic response and insulin management in response thereto.

In short, the worst thing anyone can do is to skip breakfast and then take 5 or 8 or however many cups of coffee or tea it takes to get you through a day.

Every cup contains that poison sugar. This sends your body's glycemic index through a few ceilings in a matter of minutes...but hey it keeps you going, right?

Welcome to type II diabetes before long.

But hey, don't take my word for it. Do some research in the matter.

So start by cutting coffee and tea out of your life and substitute it for water - 2 litres per day minimum and make this a habit, not a 2 week thingy.

More later.

:agree::agree::agree:

And then it gets fried/baked/cooked in fat:gag:

Have a small bit as a treat once a month if you absolutely must.

ENJOY & AVOID PART 1 Beverages

Enjoy:

Water, de-caff coffee (without sugar), Soy milk, Cow's milk (low fat and fat free), Tea - all types, no sugar.

Avoid:

Alcohol (Yes I know - all alcohol), All beverages sweetened with sugar, high fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners, Coconut milk, Energy drinks, All hot or cold high fat/ sugar containing beverages.

The important thing in controlling your blood sugar levels is to have 5-6 low GI meals a day.

This is important when you understand the body's insulin response to blood sugar levels.

There are only about 2 or 3 types of sugar the body "understands". They are glucose, fructose and lactose.

Glucose accounts for the majority of these SIMPLE sugars and the body breaks any and all sugars down to mostly glucose because glucose is the key to energy in the cell.

If your body does not get a constant supply of food it goes into a "lock-down" of sorts.

The brain tells the body to hold back on fat burning because something is wrong with the supply. Fat burning is the most "costly" and complicated method for the body to access reserves and the moment the food supply isn't constant the brains says hang on now, let us not waste energy to get energy from fat...

When that cuppa lands in the belly at 11:00, suddenly there is a crisis because brain commandeers pancreas to crank up the insulin line. Insulin mops up the huge amount of excessive sugars suddenly available and here comes the precious part now...

The excess sugars mopped up by insulin is stored as fat for reserves because the food supply is not constant and so Bod wants reserves.

I think you can see the pattern emerging by now;)

Hello Sue:wave:

As was said before, nuke the bacon. You will have to decide for yourself how radical a change you want to make. The more radical the change, the more time you should spend implementing it.

If you have a look at what is in the BBQ sauce you might be unpleasantly surprised at the contents...

Also mash is not the way to go if you really want to make a real change. I realize this could be in line with your WW plan but humour me, PM me your postal address and I'll send you and Matt some literature.

This offer is also open to any other person seriously interested in the contents of this thread.

So since you started eating healthy what has been your favourite meal?

Hmm... difficult one as I'm quite into experimenting with different recipes at the mo. Doing the WW core plan, it's all about eating healthy, unprocessed foods, so all the jars of cook in sauces and stuff have gone, and I'm now eating lots of fresh, wholesome foods with recipes made from scratch. The carrot soup is quite yummy, but I'm also partial to salmon and stir fried veggies, or marinated grilled chicken and salad.

How do you control your blood sugar levels constantly?
I didn't think that was possible for a working person...

Like Sue, I work some silly, irregular hours, and it can be difficult to know whether you're gonna eat at all some shifts if it's really busy (welcome to 21st century NHS!!). I make sure I keep myself well hydrated, and take 2x 1 litre bottles of drink (usually sugar free diluted squash) to work with me every day, making sure I do drink both of them before I return home. I take lots of fruit with me, and keep having fruit regularly throughout the day, even if it just means nibbling on grapes on a busy shift. It is difficult to do, and if you're running around like a headless chicken, you may well not get a break or anything to eat for 12-14 hours!

Min

Try some nuts also. 4-6 almonds (raw and unsalted) will also do nicely but the problem is you keep munching more and then you get the opposite of what you wanted:bonk::lol:

The chicken and BBQ sauce was ready made from morrisons (fresh) and yeah it is taken into account on WW and at the moment we both have plenty of points at the moment the more weight we loose the less we will have and so the bacon will go. At the moment I am more than happy with the changes I have made, and I will continue to make changes over time.

It would be nice if we could share ideas, thanks Mini for the recipe for carrot soup. The idea of this thread is to be able to help and support people, people are making changes to their lives hopefully for ever and I would like to say that every one does this slightly differently and at different paces.

Could not agree more and I wish you and Matt all the best in this.

Looking forward to hearing of your progress:thumbs:

I just finished my lunch.

Tesco Healthy living Ministrone soup, packed with veggies, pasta and loads of goodness, they are on two for £2 at the moment, in the refridgerated section. They come in a pot that has about 600ml in them.

It was absolutely gorgeous, I'm nicely full and it was only 5 WW points for the entire tub. 310 calories and 1.4g of saturated fat if anyone is interested.

Heartily recommended.

You can make your own soup for fewer WW points if you have the inclination!

Just remember diets are the biggest money making gimmicks

It isnt really rocket science

Get off ya backside.....stop eating crap....and exercise.

Or said in a more proactive way...

If calories in is less than calories used, then you'll lose weight :p

Eat 5 or 6 times a day In small portions can work.

Something to do with metabolism.

I am sure the people who started the ideas of weight watchers and the like are making a fortune of people like me but however, I have tried to eat health before and do more exercise, and it works for a couple of days, however if I do something like weight watchers I tend to stick to it better for some reason. I guess that is why these people make money, others must be like me.

We have just had a lovely pizza from tesco, one of there healthy choice ones, just a smallish margarita, think it had low fat cheese. (only 6 weight watchers points) one of the nicest pizzas I have had in a long time.

I was only saying to matt last night, as we are both doing this we are planning meals a few days in advance and cooking more fresh stuff that I am really enjoying it, and am feeling better in myself.

Now all I need is the treadmill back and working and I will be well away.
