Hitting the big 4-0 this year... looking at going away with the wife for a couple of days. Had thought about Bath, as like history and never been, also some photo opportunity too!!! Would also be tempted by Jersey (depending on price), or Edinburgh... So quite a varied range!!!

Likes : Good food, nice bars/pubs, history and photography!!! Anywhere else to consider (for July)?

Guernsey is a much nicer place than Jersey.
Ok jersey has alot more comercial stuff and leading retailers but Guernsey is quieter smaller to get round scenes that take your breath away and history to boot.

Plenty of photo oppertunities too.

Normally get some real good deals on say 3 nights hotel and a car plus flights quite cheap.

Poland is superb, cheap and loads of interesting photography with auschwitz and salt mines etc etc

Bath is beautiful. Great architecture.

Would love to go for Auschwitz but probably not for a 40th birthday celebration.

Trust me. You want somewhere pretty, and semi-romantic....even if it means leaving the camera at home (unless Mrs Russ is also a tog).

The beautiful Yorkshire Dales is my suggestion. Plenty to keep you, your camera and t'other half happy.

How about York and you can take in Harrogate and the Dales (as suggested above too).

Plenty of history, lots of shopping and good food place, plenty of scenic and also tourist places around (e.g. Castle Howard, North York Moors Steam Railway) and lots to photograph along the way.

Have done York before, nice but looking for something new

Bath - and Bristol! Castle Combe village for a cream tea [or motor racing if that's your bag]

The cake shop in Marshfield (5 miles up the A420) is almost as pretty, much cheaper & tastes far better, but a visit to Castle Combe is a must.

The White Horse in Ford does excellent food if you want lunch or supper.

Bradford on Avon is very good for coffee shops/tea rooms as well. :)

Bath is lovely...

good sugestion....

A nice B&B off the Holloway Road and 2 tickets for The Arsenal.

Bah, forgot to mention...

If Bath is on the agenda, Lacock Abbey is an absolute must.

How about the new forest, loads to do great photography, some lovely places to stay, Winchester is a stone throw away plus romantic beach walks in the evenings.
