The price for this has totally confirmed it for me that apple are total rip off merchants.

IMO:-)

I'll agree the price point is flawed.

£269 to compete with units like the nexus 7 and fire - both £100 or so cheaper. Or to look at it another way: 2/3 the price of the equivalent iPad or 1/4 the price of an air which is now the entry level laptop.

In my opinion apple should have dropped features to hit a pp of around £200, that's about the limit for a impulse spend for many people.

That would be because its worth it. Wait four months before buying anything apple - that way they have usually released an update to fix whatever issues there are plus the price and demand has dropped to the point where it's affordable.

Apple will always be able to sell their products over android because of their os and user interface. I hate the android/windows mobile systems, apples I love.

Apple prices do not drop until a new product cycle, there is simply no margin left after Apple for anyone to discount.

Personally I'm holding out for a Surface Pro to replace my iPad3 + MBP with one device....roll on release day next year!

My Mrs (an iPad user from the start of gen 1) is very excited about this... it'll go in her handbag you see! I'm sure she's not alone, I doubt Apple will have any trouble shifting these.

If it had a retina disply, I think it would have been acceptable at £269, but with the standard display, I think £229 would have been an acceptable price.

That said, I'm sure Apple will have no problems selling loads of the ipad mini, at £269.

Maybe it's an Australian thing - prices on apple stuff here drops after a few months then stays steady until the next lot.

I really couldn't see the point of them, but now that I have seen it, it makes more sense. I often watch a movie or read a book in bed and the ipad has always been too big for that, whilst the iphone too small. This is the perfect form factor for that so I am going to sell my ipad 1 and put the money towards the cost of a mini

Im sure Apple would be saving that for the 2nd gen iPad Mini. In reality, other than that, there is not enough to justify a newer product (IMO) so why add it on now when you could save it for another 18 months down the line?

I think £229 would have been an acceptable price.
I would have said to make the more approachable at that price of £200 would have been even better but Apple know, if they charged people more than £300, they would still sell.

Apple can charge what they want and still sell.

Apple can charge what they want and still sell.

Thats not true. They charge at the top end of what they know they can get away with. They can't literally charge what they want. People aren't stupid.

Thus proving that Apple are rip of merchants like the OP suggested

Persoanlly i buy within a budget, not on brand names, so i have never (and will never) by anything prefixed with an i ;)

Not really, rip off merchants sell things that are overpriced for thier quality (often selling things that cost a lot for very little quality). Selling at the top end of a price point and being able to make sales is being an excellent businessman, not a rip off merchant.

I buy the things that are the best at what they do, and I am happy to pay a premium for that, life's too short, so I own lots of products prefixed with an i

Maybe I was a bit far fetched in my statement.

To be fair, Apple are the kings at branding, they could put an i in front of anything and sell it at a premium

I just find that there is always an equivalent alternative to all of their products and 9 times out of 10 it's at a substantial discount to the i branded merchandise

And yes, as you can tell, i am a self confessed Apple Hater :D

Apple haters stand behind this statement but really think about it. Does it make sense? What you are effectively saying is that the majority of the technology buying world are zombies that can't think for themselves. A company cannot become as successful as Apple have and outsell every other manufacturer on marketing alone.

Think of it as a bell curve. There will be the first short end who will buy anything like you suggest just because it is apple, then there is the other tail end like you who hate everything apple. The large majority of the bell curve are the people who make decisions on the products not because of marketting but because the products are the best at what they do.

I'm sure that apple haters will continue to stand behind this statement but it's very naive to think that it's true given the massive success and the fact that people spending their hard earned cash for the most part are not stupid.

If you look purely on tech specs you'll always find that. But stand back and look at the whole experience and nothing comes close - especially in the tablet world. Pc and Mac world is very different. But no other tablet comes close to offering the entire experience you get when you own an ipad.

Being a "hater" defies logic and points to a character flaw. I don't like HTC or Samsung phones, but I don't hate the companies. If you don't like a product, fine. But to hate a company just because it's successful really is weird.

Rip off? Are they forcing you to buy one?

Never said I was buying, twas my opinion :-S

Been the apple route (iPhone/iPad) over rated and over priced, but if people my self included, want to get sucked in by all the hype about the product that's up to them. Still doesn't change the fact that the new iPad's over priced. I moved from iPad to Samsung's tab, much better experience, plus no iTunes!! :-)

OMG, are we not allowed to make jokes in here anymore, did you not see the big smilie next to it

It's not like i used to send Steve Jobs hate mail every weekend

Maybe i'm used to other forums where as soon as you dis a product someone posts up one of those motivational HATERS pictures

I apologise and will not use the "H" word anymore :nono: :)

but if people my self included, want to get sucked in by all the hype about the product that's up to them.

Or could it be that we just prefer the device? For our own needs it's the best one?

Again, you are going down the route of suggesting that people who buy this product are somehow being duped.

You prefer your other tablet now, which is great, you've found the product that fits your needs better than the one you had before. But why suggest that somehow people who haven't followed your lead are being hoodwinked?

I can see it working, I like the idea of it, having had the iPad and iPad2 I think the mini would suit my needs more.

Its easier for lugging around for me and fits what I would / am looking for

+1 from me

I agree with everything you've said!!!! :o

But I have found, through personal experience, apple (iPhone/iPad/iMac etc) are all well worth the investment. I have the iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and am picking up my iMac this weekend.

I used to be one of the 'apple haters' (lol) until I spent some time on one and realised that it was intuitive, simple, easy and so comfortable to use, and that's the end of it. I was sold. So my final item is my 27inch iMac and I so can't wait!!!!!!

Apple are very good at locking people into there Ecosystem which means people will pay a premium for there products.

iTunes being the ecosystem and most of their products work exceptionally well around it.

It would make no sense for anyone in our house to buy a phone or tablet that isn't an apple product.

All our tv shows are in iTunes, all our movies -iTunes. All our music iTunes.

Our shared photo streams in iPhoto.

3 apple tv's

Smaller, lighter and cheaper than the full size iPad. I love Apple products and will be happily pre-ordering one on Friday. It's exactly what I wanted it to be and have been waiting on. The price is a little higher than I wanted it to be but I look after everything I own and will have this for years to come.

Or 7 months until the iPad Mini 2 comes out

(That was a joke by the way, just in case anyone thinks i was being deadly serious ;))

Looks interesting. I've always fancied an iPad but I've always found something else to buy with my money instead of the iPad so never bought one :(

But I am tempted by this, I would just like to feel one in my hand first to see if its not too small. :D

It looks like it's a "meh" product from what I know of its specs and price compared to the potentially better competition.

I'm actually quite good at not replacing stuff like that. Which for a female I think is rather impressive :)

Shoes.... Sigh!

And I'm the same, I don't replace it until it doesn't do it's job anymore.

Don't forget a handbag................. you'll need a new one each season to carry you iPad Mini about in :D

Hahahaha nope! I need a bigger one because I like the size of the current iPad best :-D

See, one thing leads to another, and before you know it you've bought a whole new wardrobe thanks to Mr Apple and his new fangled igadgets

YAY!!! New clothes, new clothes, la la la la la la!!

:D you'll have a hard time convincing any woman that's a bad thing :p

I own/like Apple products but I still think the Nexus 7 will give this a run for it's money (quite literally - nearly £100 cheaper).

The price tag is too high for it's spec IMO - for instance - pixels per inch and screen resolution being inferior to both the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7.

Choice of aspect ratio of 4:3 is interesting too.

I've been waiting for the price to be confirmed as to what tablet I'll be buying and unfortunately this is just a bit too expensive.

My wife is after one already. She has a iPad 3 and will probably sell it for this. But she needs to know a few things I don't quite know myself.

Is it even HD?
Is it quad core?
Does it have 4g / LTE compatibility?

Ta

Apple haters stand behind this statement but really think about it.

I think the mistake yourself and a lot of other "pro apple" crowd make is this, labelling people as "Apple haters". I for one am certainly not an Apple hater, but I get labelled as such all the time by people just because I am not particularly drawn in by what they have to offer, as everyday appliances. On the contrary, I know more about Apple, their history and their products than probably 95% of people, in fact I probably know more about them than I do Microsoft.

Apple products are brilliant for people who don't care how it works (and don't want to know) and want something that is as simple and idiot proof as possible. Most of the time, they excel in doing this, better than anyone else, and this is where their good marketing comes in. However, it comes at a premium cost, and if you've got a bit of "get up and go" about you when it comes to technology, they're not the only manufacturer out there who can offer you something, and you can often save money by shopping around. This doesn't make anyone a hater.

If I won the lottery I'd probably end up ordering a house full of Apple products, mainly because I'm a tech head who wants a bit of everything. However, I wouldn't switch away from what I use on a day to day basis, become a Microsoft hater over night and nor would the world end.

The majority of your post is irrelevant because I was addressing that at somebody who labelled them self an "apple hater". So it wasn't me giving that name it was them. I wasn't describing people who just aren't drawn to them I was describing people who have an irrational dislike

The ipad as a device and iOS as an operating system is worse than an Asus Transformer running Honeycomb or Jellybean.

However the iPad overall is a better device for one reason, the app store. The apps are either better or just don't exist outside of iOS, why are they only there? marketing

I have 2 ipads and 2 android tablets. I prefer the android tablets and I prefer the OS, but sadly I'm stuck with the oddities of iOS because the apps are better.

So to sum it up, the bits that apple have done are average, but their marketing has attracted people to the device who produce great apps.
