asbestos jacket ?

My bad as explained this subject can get heated, where is the wedding, ie church, registry office etc and what are they(happy couple) expecting from you, bridal prep, formals, ceremony, first dance, speeches, candids etc

The more info given the better advice you will get

Matt

do you have a flashgun - if not you need one

also try to get a fast lens like a 50mm f1.8

and back ups of everything

However i'd really think about not doing it , because spoiling your freinds wedding is not where you want to be.

Brides home, ceremony, first dance, cutting the cake and speeches

Okay so that in itself is a fair bit of work, potentially about 16 hours work, probably less, at least I would hope.

But where is it?

you'll need fast lenses for a church wedding because of the low light in there(flash most likely won't be allowed). something like a 17-50mm 2.8 zoom would be far more suitable than your 'slower' standard zooms.

:plusone: I would also suggest getting to the church and looking at lighting etc, also you didn't mention formal photo's do they really not want these

yes sorry formals to

Okay I would suggest you need to ask what ones they want and if there are any special requirements like people that don't get on or say they what great granny dot in x y and z photo's but she cannot be standing for more that 5 minutes, it's all stuff that needs to be thought of ;)

Simple answer. If you dont know what kit you need dont do the wedding.

This may not sound helpfull but its the best advice i can give.

Simple plain advice but very sensible IMO

As long as you set their expectations - then there should be no problem.
Better kit is always, well, better... if you either have or can afford to get it.

Its got to be better than no photographs of their special day - surely?

Similar situation over here - wifes family, (cousin), no money etc, and would be grateful for whatever they get from the day.

Just do your best and enjoy the experience.

B.

In my experience peoples expectations are often more than they let on in these situations. While they may say they understand the lack of experience when the images come back and they are not happy the story will be very different.

The thing is people often say they cant afford a photographer, but did they get a free venue, free cake, free dress so on. 99% of the time the answer is no.

yes but all those things you mentioned are considered "must haves", whereas a lot of people see a pro photographer as something of a "like to have"

Then there are some people who ring you, admitting they are finally getting round to sorting the photograher....yet the wedding is next month! I've had that a couple of times before. Some people have plans to get a photographer but don't bother as it is not high on their priorities. Now if I'm already booked I just think to myself

You really need to beg, steal or borrow Another body, at least 1 flash unit and some faster lenses (which maybe they could hire for you?)

Also I would ensure you have public liability insurance in place, as we live in a very litigious society now and you don't want to be sued for someone tripping over your kit bag or tripod or even you. That could get very expensive. It will also cover you for 3rd party damage you may cause.
