Yes
Hi all, now then, my lady and I have decided to tie the knot next year and at some point in the next few months we'll be deciding on a photographer.

Being into this photography lark i'd like to have a digital copy of the images for my own archive, NOT to do the tog out of reprint business as we both feel our small number of guests would not place many reprint orders.

Would it be unreasonable to ask the pro to provide us with a cd rom of his (our) pictures say after a period of time has elapsed. I would fully expect this to be chargeable at a reasonable price.

Newly weds we have spoken to have all said this was not an option with the togs they had.

The Wedding photographer I had
:http://www.lawrencecliftphotography.co.uk/
does this with his digital packages. When he delivers the pictures he also passes the copyright to you with a signed letter, I can tinker with and print as many photos as I like. He takes unlimited photos of the day all on a Canon 1D I got about 600 ish, he comes highly recommended by the way:thumbs:

Getting images on CD is becoming more popular esp. at the lower end of the market, it cuts down on the costs for the tog. I've seen packages for £200 for a full day's coverage and all the images on CD - but they're images straight out of the camera with no editing, etc.

Other togs will release the images after 6 months or maybe a year for a small fee when they feel sales have dried up and there's no point in retaining the images. Shop around and I'm sure you'll find someone who will meet your needs. Also consider looking outside your area, often a tog in an area where supply exceeds demand you can iron out a good deal because they need the work. There's a wedding happening today in Taunton using a tog from Cornwall because he was cheaper and waived travel expenses to get the gig.

There's always somebody willing to do what you're after.... be aware though, it's reasonably sound advice to realise " you usually get what you pay for".

We did consider offering this kind of service.. it has it's pros and cons. Currently we fight to retain control over how our images are seen and presented by people other than the couple.

As for the linked website.... what can I say? Youtube links at the bottom of the home page for cars.... come on? Representative of a serious wedding photography business? Hope he's not a member here..... :(

Wedding shots are reasonable though....

I was thinking about the six month thing. As we both have no granparents i would think reprints will be limited to parents and brothers/sisters. I can see what you mean about togs being concerned how thier services ie prints are seen by others i'm only after my own archive. I have a thing about important pictures being lost in the event of fire/flood/theft etc so like to keep a copy of all mine at my folks house as a belt and braces kind of thing.

Imagine a flood that wrote off your only copy of your wedding album and the tog had done away some years before with your files.

i got married in the US and when i looked for a photographer there every one of them offered this as a package.
so it seems the norm there.

it is great as it has meant i have made photobooks from photobox etc for my granparents, the in-laws etc and they all love them

I thought i might have got my ear 'ole bent with this from the pro's saying "it'd do us out of reprint business" but the response is positive.

Just as an aside with regard to copyright i would have thought the bride & groom own it as they commissioned the shots but that isnt what i'm reading. Any one care to clarify.

(oh BTW, inanerredstripe, having seen your site and with your location, you're top of the list so far so yes you might be getting a professional invite)

No, the photographer retains the copyright unless they choose to give it away, usually at a high price.

This should not be a problem - I have the digital photos from my wedding on CD

   Congratulations by the way

Weddings are not really my thing, I’ve done a few (only when asked) so I’m not an expert in the field but you may want to have a look at the photos that this guy does I stumbled across this site via a post on the photographers forum – I think this guys work is stunning, although he is not in the UK – it’s still inspirational

Cool, thats sorted out some stuff.

It's looking like organising a wedding is much like taking a photo.....lots of stuff to setup, coordinate and happen at the right time to get the perfect result.

If that's what you want I am sure you will find a photographer who will do what you want.

The key thing to ask for will be "full resolution" images i.e. same as the camera shot rather than "screen resolution".

I would also suggest that when discussing this you talk in terms of an "unrestricted personal licence" i.e you can do what you like with them for non-commercial purposes rather than passing you copyright - as you can see us togs get a bit fussy about copyright.

If the tog does offer a reprint service I am sure that if you say you will push the guests wanting reprints towards him for the first six / 12 months you will no doubt get the CD for less than if you wanted the photos immediately after the event - but then not all togs worry about this.

Yes that in a nut shell is what i would like and the point of my thread. I have found out what i needed to know and probably found my wedding tog as well.....result.

Thanks

yup. getting married IS a bit like organising a military campaign. mainly battling what the mother in law wants to do.:eek:not to mention bloo..ming expensive.
why do we do it?
ive been married nearly 22 years. serves me right i suppose. :).good luck dave , whatever you do.

hi

you should def as someone mentioned check the resolution you sign up for
i got tiff files which are fine - (before i even knew what tiff was) but some people i know have some j-peg and the quality meant that they could not blow them up to the size they wanted

The best bit is that i've done it before....second time around should be better.
