Hello to all the wedding togs out there :wave:

I currently us 5d (and a 500d back up) for weddings and im looking to get a new body (to replace the 500d).

Im torn between 1D or another 5D and i wondered which you all use and prefer?

(also the reasons would be good!)

What 5D do you have already ? A classic, MkII or MkIII - it might made a difference to the recommendation...

Also what 1D are you considering ? a new 1Dx, or used 1D MkIV, III, II/n ?

The 5D MkII and MkIII are used a lot by wedding photographers, especially since they added a second card slot. I always used 1-series bodies but shot other types of work which needed high FPS. The 1Dx is IMVHO overkill for a pure-play wedding or wedding/portrait photographer ...
 
Well i do sport photography was well so the high fps would be useful for that.

I have classic and was thinking about 5D II (can't afford a III).
And i know nothing about the 1series.

A 7d then, better focussing and FPS for sports than anything else of a similar price, nice large viewfinder and decent IQ for weddings. You can keep some of your savings to swap the 5d for a MkIII next year.

There is no mk II yet. You can get a mint s/h one for £700 with warranty.

I may be about to buy a 2nd and retire an older camera, they're a real bargain atm.

I'm trying to decide between a 7D and a 70D to use alongside my 5D3 but keep seeing references to noise issues with the 7D.

It's certainly noisier than the 5d III and most newer Nikon's, but it's far from unusable. I tend to believe that people who complain about 'noise' have never used a film camera for an idea of just what they're asking of a camera, or printed a high ISO image, they just wander round the internet whinging about 'noise', as if a 3200 iso image should be identical to a 400 iso one :cuckoo:

What about using my body? bit fat around the middle and greying hairs on to. Mind willing body weak :D

I went from a 450D which was awful at ISO400 and pretty unusable by ISO800 to a 7D which is still great at ISO1600 and acceptable at ISO3200.

70-200 2.8
50mm 1.4

me thinks you should ditch the 5D1 and get the 5D2 and the 7D.
5D2 is perfect for weddings - excellent low light performance (i routinely use 3200) and light. the 7D is bkup and for anything else that needs a robust AF, although i find the IQ of the 7D drops off sharply beyond iso800.

i tried the 1d3 as my 2nd cam but its too heavy to lug around for a whole day.

I think I'll try the 7d as it seems a good choice. Then save up for something newer.
Thanks for all the advice its been a great help and always good to know what others use. There is soooooo much out there to chose from i can't keep up!!!
 
Purerly as an amateur. I have both a 5D2 and a 7D. Use the 5D2 for landscapes, still life etc. But use the 7D for motorsport and currently attempting birds in flight with it.

Both are excellent, but for high ISO stuff the 5D2 wins.

Interesting. I took a load of shots at the weekend on my 450D at ISO400 and thought they were fine, even when pixel peeping at 100%.
