I took a Canon IXUS 400 along to my friend's wedding a few years back and ended up taking a shot of them during the first dance....that was the main pic they ended up framing in their front room! If I'm not doing a paid job, I like to travel light (a Canon S95). Happy shooting, if I were you though, I'd stick with a 35mm prime and hang back.
