Ive been asked to do the photo's for a friends wedding and i want to do the best job i can. so i have a couple of questions i need help with.

1) Is it to my advantage to get a wide angle lens or a zoom wide angle lens
2) if so which lens should i go for

the kit i have is as follows:

sony a300
standard lens
200mm lens
300mm lens
500mm lens
external flash
2 x 4GB memory cards
1 x 2GB memory card
1 x 8GB memory card

the 300mm and 500mm wont be needed for shooting.

its up to you whether you prefer a prime or wide angle zoom but id go for the zoom, gives you more options in case of space restrictions.

what 200mm lens is it?

I know zero about Sony gear but I'd be thinking the Sony 28-75mm f2.8 SAM could do a good job and isn't too expensive (compared to the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar) but then being a cropped sensor 28mm isn't really wide.

What's the standard lens? Is it the Sony E 18-55mm? You may not need to worry about having fast glass when wide open at 18mm as you can get away with slower shutter speeds therefore the 28-75mm would compliment things nicely.

I use 70-300mm on my second camera and a wide zoom on my main camera, it's always handy to have all the possible shots covered without having to change lens. I would find a fixed wide lens too restrictive, especially for a wedding where the photo opportunity could be anywhere unexpected.

the standard lens is a sony 3.5-5.6/18-70

The wide end is still the same, you can probably get away with 3.5 at 18mm. What kind of budget have you got available or are you hiring the lens?

not sure on budget at the min was just after getting some idea of type of lens to go for then deside how much i can afford.

if i was to go for a faster lens is there one you would recommend to many out there i dont wanna go for the wrong type

If the wedding is later in the year, bear in mind that shooting outside at anything past 4pm is going to need a flash, so don't plan outdoor shots if it is a late wedding.

Pick up a 50mm F1.8, cheep and will be brilliant for some nice portraits in the late afternoon.
