We have all been looking at another thread about wedding photography-well how about a serious one to give wedding photographers ideas amongst one another on how you market yourself and general pitfalls you have come across in your daily working life.

I donotwish this to be a slanging match - but a sensible thread about working practices.

No questions about the basics -just ideas and ways to help each other overcome real professional issues.

If you think this is a silly idea -just ignore it and do not post

Thankyou all

Martin

Don't think it's silly at all and a a complete newbe with an intrest and shall look and learn

If anyone is going to comment at all to others or maybe all pro togs are wanting to keep everything to themselves.
I dont know

i will bite first.

knowledge of camera and settings.
make sure you know how it works and how to use it.

get a list of shots the bride and groom would like inc a list of every person in each of the shots. you can either call them yourself or have ushers, best man etc get them ready.

ensure you have enough memory to cover the event.

make sure the B & G are aware of your skill level.

the two most common lenses suggested are a 70-200 and a 24-70/17-55.

a lowlight prime will help when there is no light(eg: party afterwards)

registrars arent keen on flash during the ceremony, check first.

do not take pictures of the actual book while they are signing.

enjoy the shoot

lets hope it turns into something good.

oh, dont be afraid to tell someone to move(politely of course)

I'm not sure if it has happened yet but someone posted a link a few weeks ago about the government wanting to ban it for data protection reasons.....

I'm sure someone will post a link soon

data protection etc. the book tends to have a few people per page and you are obviously copying it without permission

it has been about for a while, they get the couple to sign then turn the page/ produce a blank sheet to pose for the photos

So what get them to move to a blank page first after signing it. Or just do a more general further back shot.

Did you edit that didnt seethat at first lol

yeah, sorry:thumbs:

Radiate calm and confidence - the couple are crapping themselves enough without your stress adding to it.

Smile.

Network with other photographers and other vendors, pass work around, give and thou shalt receive. One day you're going to need someone to cover for you - make sure you have a big pool to choose from.

If they've paid for something at the wedding, shoot it.

Never let your CF cards leave your person.

Drink water, Pee, Eat - suprising how easy it is to forget.

Be nice to everyone at the wedding, they could be your next client.

Shoot the wedding the way you would like your own to be shot. Stay true to yourself. Are people hiring a photographer or you ?

Smile

Wear sunscreen.

Speaking from the other side of the fence as it were, having been a groom!!

The photographer we used was brilliant and great fun. Him and his wife were very relaxed, jovial and chivvied people along with great humour and patience.

We had discussed the shots we wanted beforehand which were taken with the minimum of fuss and loads of laughs.

The Tog spent time telling everyone what he wanted and told us the time he expected the various shots to take and kept everyone informed.

They organised everyone quickly into the relevant groups and took the vast majority of pics within 1/2 hour of finishing the vows.

A nice touch in the evening was that he printed off one of the photo's of me and my new wife, mounted into a large black card for all the guests to sign and handed this to us in the evening. total surprise and a lovely touch:thumbs:

During the evening they mingled, shot candids, generally joined in and had fun

Was not cheap but the little extra touches made it all worthwhile and we reccommended the Tog to most of our friends

Yes if you do a good job of their wedding are sure to get refferals. Thats good.

We just got married in Cyprus and over there they don't use a book, they just get you to sign three copies of the marriage license. And to be honest the pictures the tog took of us signing the license looked daft, not one of our favourites.
