Wedding Photography - Positions?

When doing a wedding, are there any rules regarding the positioning of the bride and groom?

I was told by a wedding photographer that the bride should always be on the grooms left, closest to his heart, but I've since seen loads of photographs where this isn't the case.

I'm assuming that this is just down to individual preference, or are there any "rules" regarding this?

Cheers

Dave

I think it really depends how traditional you or the couple want to be. The only rule you need to follow really is to deliver shots that will make the client happy and if that means having the bride on one particular side so be it. I tend to let them stand whichever way feels most comfortable for them (something I suss out pre-wedding) as it can help give a more natural shot.

Thanks for the info, it does make sense to have the couple the way they feel most comfortable.

Hi Dave
Many old school pro's have their own preferences. They were taught in a particular way. Nowadays weddings seem to be much less formal occasions. Positions should also reflect who you are shooting. Every couple is different.

Have you shot many weddings yet Dave? They are pretty tough affairs and you need some decent kit to ensure you are able to maintain quality in the toughest of lighting situations.

Posing is a tough area but it really depends on your style. I prefer the candid (PJ) style but most people want some formals and it helps if you know what makes a nice image.

Practice a lot and learning from images that appeal to you helps a lot.

According to tradition, the bride should be on the opposite side to whichever way the groom is 'handed' - i.e. if he's right handed the bride should be on the left.

This is so he can draw his sword to protect her honour.

Or some guff.
