Don't worry, it's not another one of 'those' wedding threads.

A make up artist has come to me looking to have some photos done to add to her portfolio. She is branching out to the world of wedding make-up so needs a portfolio of her work.

Having had no interest in getting involved with actual weddings it's not something i have spent any time looking into. I need to produce images that are flattering and soft, yet at the same time highlight and show off the make-up.

I'm thinking keep it simple. Head and shoulders shots, single soft box, reflector and possibly a hair light shot to a natural background.
Does this sound about right?
 
Yep, the wedding bit it almost totally irrelevant unless there is clothing to be included in the shots and softbox/beauty dish would be my preference. Have a look at clamshell lighting. :)
 
Hair would probably benefit with some form of back lighting (could be natural window light)but as Ali says softbox/beauty dish as main light source.

Other than head n shoulders you might like to include a few "artist in action" type shots showing the artist and the client sharing a joke and being very happy.
 
Try some in daylight to. I'd also do some close up shots of her actually doing the work with the "Bride" and some close-ups of her array of makeup for some extra interest.

Agree totally. You'll need a classic beauty set-up for this.
 
Actually I disagree...a bit. While I think the classic beauty shot is a must with losts of head and shoulders shots, I think there is probably a case for a location shoot too if it isn't going to cost too much with a wedding dress in a nice location to showcase "the whole package". Rather than just a bunch of head and shoulder shots it would add so much more to the overall effect.

But then you're not seeing the product - which is the makeup. :shrug:

What I was saying was that there would be lots of head and shoulder shots to showcase the makeup, but I also think people like to see things in context. Therefore I would think about doing a bit of a location shoot to show how the makeup looks in natural light, against a different background, the whole mix really.
 
My suggestion is to do a before shot in a home environment then an after shot in a park using natural light.

Its the make up artist you are trying to sell, not your photography.

Makes it look more realistic.

Also, use various shaped models rather than a stunning / high angled cheek boned model.... :)
