Hi All,

Im hoping someone can help me here, I am looking to start a website to show some of my pictures however there seem to be hundreds of them and I am at a total loss on where to begin. I have seen Click Pic advertised a lot in magazines but is this the right one for me, then there is the issue of should I copyright my images or just watermark them. Any advise you can give me would be awesome.

Lets start with;

List exactly what you need it to do. There's lots of choice, but they all have their good points and bad points, like cameras - none of them are really 'bad' but they can be totally unsuitable.

Personally I hate the Clickpic type sites, their business model is to take advantage of photographers who have no idea about websites, like those Cannon and Nickon cameras you see for sale in the Canary Islands invented for people who think they've found a great camera at a bargain price.

Hi Phil

Thanks for the reply, one thing I don't need is an option to sell any images (at the moment) and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

1- Something easy to maintain its worth bearing in mind that I have never constructed a website let alone maintain one hence why I mentioned Click Pic

2- enough space to showcase different types of photography (different portfolios)

3- it would also be important for people to be able to leave feedback on the images they have seen, obviously dependant on people seeing it.

There have been several threads on here, one recent, about watermarks. I would just have a look, have a think and then make your own mind up.

As for websites, the choice is wide. If you don't mind a bit of a learning curve, it is possible to create really nice ones in Wordpress that are not difficult to maintain.

I currently use zenfolio. Like you I don't sell my photos but I thought if I want to in the future its just a few clicks to sort it out and there's no need to create a new website. One of the main reasons I went with zenfolio was the blog and also the ease of creating a website. I've been able to create additional pages and I don't know anything about creating a website. Zenfolio make it pretty easy and most things you would like to do are easy to search for on google. The basic account is £25 a year.

I don't know if you're willing to pay for a site or not, but if you want your own domain name and a more personalised site there are a few good hosting services which are fairly cheap and provide a number of 1 click installs that you can choose from. I am currently using iPage and it has a load of things you can install such as Wordpress and Joomla, also Zenfolio and a couple of other image gallery type things to pick from as well. A free domain name as well which is pretty cool.

Another hosting provider you could use is 123-reg which in my opinion (and many others) is a lot better, although a bit more costly to set up. I only went with iPage because it's cheap as chips!

Also, as far as I know, if it is your image then you automatically own the copyright - someone correct me if I am wrong please!

If you don't mind spending around £60-70 take a look at ProPhoto 4 themes for wordpress.

Have a look also at the predesigned themes for Joomla or Wordpress. To find them just google photographer themes for the above mentioned content management systems. Those softwares are supported by most hosting providers and even that you will have a higher learning curve at the begining you'll get a lot a flexibility without being tighed to a certain provider.

Hi Chris,

I was in the same boat as you I guess. I just started a Wordpress site and I've found it pretty easy to use and it had the desired affect. The original use was as a way of sharing photos of a friends wedding I shot but I also use it for other photos and projects I've set myself. I should probably update it more often but considering the relatively low amount of time (and a complete lack of knowledge) that went into getting it this far I'm happy with it.
I didn't want to spend any money so found the best 'free' wordpress theme that suited my needs. Its here if you want to have a look http://stephenwellsphotography.wordpress.com
