I've recently created a website which I hope to add to as I go along & build up my portfolio. Please can you guys take a look at it & tell me if I'm missing anything vital? I know it's simple but it's just the beginning.

Any feedback will be most appreciated,

Hi there,

I like simple - its easy to navigate and straight to the point.

Couple of quibbles sorry...About me page, there is a "j" in photography and the heading doesn't read right IMHO.

maybe - Captured Memories in pictures don't speak volumes. They speak a lifetime.

Great work though.

Graham.

Hi Graham,

Many thanks for your feedback, most appreciated! Good spot with the 'J' it jumped out at me as soon as I looked back!

I've only just started to take photography seriously, it's a huge passion of mine & I hope its a start of something!

Cheers,

Katie

I've recently revamped my website & would like to know what you guys thought of it? It's not the finished product but there's always room for improvement :-).

From a design point of view, it's quite nice, easy to navigate and use, however, there's quite a bit wrong with it in terms of usability.

1. It uses frames - Why - There's no need for it to do this.

2. When Google searches your site (and it will, as you've linked it from here), it will see this;

Code:
<frameset rows="0,*" border="0" frameborder="0" framespacing="0"><frame SRC="[URL="http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/view-source:http://www.capturedmemories.org.uk/empty.html"]empty.html[/URL]" noresize name="unviewable" frameborder="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no" border="0" framespacing="0"></frame><frame SRC="[URL="http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/view-source:http://www.capturedmemories.moonfruit.com/#"]http://www.capturedmemories.moonfruit.com/#[/URL]" name="Main" frameborder="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" border="0" scrolling="auto" framespacing="0"></Frame></frameset>

Which will do absolutely nothing for you in terms of getting you ranked on Google and the like. Now, that's fine if you're only using the site for pleasure (and nothing wrong with that), but I suspect at some point you'll want to make the jump into paid work (from reading your site - apologies if I'm wrong)

So.... With that in mind, it would be great to set it up "right" now, then when you do come to make the jump you've got however many months less work to do, as you've already got some rankings...

I notice that it's currently built on Moonfruit - As an alternative (and still free), have a look at Wordpress - There are so many free themes out there which will do so much for you in the long term

To end on a positive, I think you've got a bright future ahead of you, as there are some very nice photos on your site :)

Hi Matt,

Many thanks for your detailed comment, it is most appreciated! That is why I'm glad there are websites like these available to speak to knowledgeable people like yourself.

I'm not that clued up when it comes to websites & I took a look at Wordpress, downloaded it but when it came to the installation, well, it threw me!

I would obviously like to do photography as a career in the future as it fulfills my happiness, where as 9 - 5 accountancy job doesn't!

I completely agree, I plan on doing it all the 'right' way to save a lot of hassle in the long term! Do you know of any online websites like Moonfruit but obviously better for my requirements?

I'll be relying more on word of mouth as I believe that is the best form of advertising so the Google ranking doesn't matter too much for the time being! :)

need to sort our your title tags, get something useful in there

also, not very professional linking to flickr. not that it works, get an error:

We're sorry, Flickr doesn't allow embedding within frames.

Hi Neil,

Thank you for your advice. I'm a long shot off professional, I just wanted somewhere to display my portfolio to interest others to use me to gain further experience whether they're looking for a photographer or someone who is already a photographer offering work experience.

I didn't realise it comes up with that error, thank you for pointing that out. I can't display all of my photo's as explained on the website hence the link. I'll sort that out :).

Thank you,

I like it but there is one striking problem for me. The background. Really is off putting. Removing it would give you a more cleaner site that will be easier on the eye. Just my opinion mind :)

As stated above. Re-design the site without the use of frames. They really are not required. Good luck :)

Hi Jon,

I've removed the background to see what it looks like & I think it looks bare now. I thought with my logo being the background it appeared full of colour & fun. I think I'm gonna have to go away & think of something to put in its place instead because I feel a plain background is too dull. What do you think?

I'll also look into removing the frames too. I didn't realise how much of a problem they were :).

Not sure if it because I'm on my iPhone but I now see the content spreads the complete width of the page on a grey BG.

There are a few things you can do. Try centring your content by giving it a set width then adding margins through CSS.
Try a White BG or some faded colouring etc etc.

At the end of the day do what you like best. Just try to take the end user into account. I run a very busy website mainly used by middle age to elderly people. I have had to change many aspects of the site to suit them even when I didn't like what I was doing.

It's a slow process but you will find a middle ground soon enough :)

Wordpress.com sounds like an ideal candidate for what you want - It's all installed for you, you just have to configure the options via an admin panel, like Moonfruit I guess :)

It's $14.99 a year to map a domain to your Wordpress.com account, but that's probably as cheap as your own hosting account anyway...

From a business perspective, yes, word of mouth is the best form of advertising, but why turn down free referrals from Google if they're available ;)
