Right, I've got the bones of my site together now. Just need to finish the last few pages and start uploading some content :D

http://www.nathanthorpe.net

I've gone fixed width so there's some consitency when viewing the pictures, otherwise I might of gone 100% width.

Anyone fancy a link exchange?

Nath.

Looks good, nice work.

I am running firefox 2 and the iframe is over shooting and running into your footer.

Its a little on the small side..its tucked away in the top left corner..let it run free (to some extent), utilise the space thats there for you. Unless your designing purely for mobile devices with tiny tiny screens...

You have no doctype on the site, this can cause some serious effects in some browsers in not displaying the site how you want it to show. Tables are out of date for website layouts and should be avoided. CSS and divs are your friends for web design.

I dont like the way you have to click twice to get the gallery, photography - nothing appears on the page..you have to look back to the menu and click on yet another link for the photos to appear..users dont like waiting or clicking too many times to get to something.

It looks nice, but the backend of it and the size lets the site down. Theres a few other points as well, but only web designers/developers would understand what i would be on about and why i would mention them. I can go into more detail if you wish.

:)

Before saying 'it's nice', I have to ask: what is the purpose of this website?

If it is a personal website, nothing more, then it looks nice. If you are looking to use it to promote your photographs/services, then lose all the waffle and just stick to things which are connected directly with photography.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

As I said it's a work in progress and I realise I have a lot of CSS tweaks to sort out (and yes I'll ditch the tables). Thankfully it's all scripted and DB driven so only a few dozen lines of code to change the entire layout :)

The Photography page obviously isn't finished as it has no content at the moment. It will, however, have details of recent works etc.

The size issue is quite ironic actually having just bought a laptop with a 1920x1200 pixel screen LOL!

Anyway it's a start and once I've got all the DB work done I can sort out the design.

I'm quite intregued by what you mean here as the page width is actually wider than your own site? Unless of course you just mean the images. Not to worry anyway as I wrote the uploader to make 3 versions of the image (one of which is larger) but at the moment I'm only using the thumbnail and medium sizes.

I was looking for a simple navigation fwd/back buttons in the gallery, it's a pain having to go back and click the next image. Whilst I liked the black and white look and feel, I gave up after 2 pix.

Having said that my site is less than average, however as a keen amateur in both photography and web site design, I can't complain.

It's looking good. The Hyperlinks to your CV isn't active and I would agree with the space comments people have made. I'd centre the box personally.

Unless this is a browser issue (like I said I haven't even begun to make it cross browser compatible yet) I'm a tad confused, because it is centered in IE!

Time to down load FF on this machine and start testing I guess..

Thanks for that, yup, no problem adding forwards and backwards arrows on the pages.

Thanks, it won't be active yet anyway as I still need to write the code to encrypt the file or password protect the download :D

Thanks

I guess it seemed smaller when its positioned left...i do actually need to make my site a little wider...just lack of time means i haven't been able to recently.

Now that yours is in the centre..it looks slightly bigger than it actually is.

And centering sites means using slightly different methods in regards to firefox (and the rest of the standards compliant browsers) and explorer.

:)

That looks alot better in the centre.
